Remember the Ladies: Women Artists of the Hudson River School
        May 2-October 31, 2010
Contrary to popular understanding, landscape painting in the 19th century was not exclusively practiced by men. Our 2010 exhibition seeks to increase awareness of a previously little-celebrated but highly talented and accomplished group of women artists, and to examine the ways in which women artists were trained and exhibited their work alongside their male colleagues. The exhibition will bring these deserving artists to the public’s attention with an exhibition in the home of the founder of the art movement known as the Hudson River School. . Read more…

Cole,Thomas born 1801 - died 1848 Thomas Cole American Hudson River School artist born 1801 - died 1848 Often considered the father of American landscape painting as well as the founder of the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole emigrated to America from Lancashire, England, when he was age eighteen. After spending a year in Philadelphia, Cole joined his family in the town of Steubenville, Ohio. While in England, Cole had been an apprentice to a designer of calico prints, and in Steubenville, he found work drawing patterns and possibly engraving woodblocks for his father's paper-hanging business. In Steubenville, Cole also began to explore landscape painting after gaining some rudimentary instruction in oil painting from a portrait painter named Stein. In 1823, Cole went with his family to Pittsburgh, where he again became an assistant in his father's business and made landscape sketches in his free time.

Introduction ...
Thomas Cole
Thomas Cole is often called the "Father of the Hudson River School of Art." In 1826 he helped to found the National Academy of Design in New York City. In 1827 he made his first visit to the White Mountains. While best known for his allegorical paintings such as the Voyage of Life and the Course of Empire series, he did many White Mountain paintings including Flume in the White Mountains View of Mount Washington Mount Chocorua Notch of the White Mountains View Near Conway ; and Mount Washington from the Upper Saco Intervale Cole was apprenticed to a calico designer and wood engraver in England before he came to the United States with his family in 1818. The rest of his life he spent much of his time sketching from nature in the Catskills, White Mountains, Adirondacks, and the coast of Maine. In 1827, at the behest of Daniel Wadsworth, Cole visited the White Mountains for the first time. He vis i ted the New Hampshire mountains again a year later with fellow artist Henry Cheever Pratt, only eight years after the first footpath was opened to Mount Washington.
