Courbet, Gustave
(b . June 10, 1819, Ornans, Fr.d. Dec. 31, 1877, La Tour-de-Peilz, Switz.), French painter and leader of the realist movement. Courbet rebelled against the Romantic painting of his day, turning to everyday events for his subject matter. His huge shadowed canvases with their solid groups of figures ("The Artist's Studio," 1855) drew sharp criticism from the establishment. From the 1860s a more sensuous and colourful manner prevailed in his work.
Early Life and Work
"Courbet with a Black Dog," painted in 1842, was accepted by the Salonthe only annual public exhibition of art in France, sponsored by the Royal Academy. When in the following years the jury for the Salon thrice rejected his work because of its unconventional style and bold subject matter, he remained undaunted and continued to submit it.
The development of Realism
The Revolution of 1848 ushered in the Second Republic and a new liberal spirit that greatly affected the arts. The Salon held its exhibition not in the Louvre itself but in the adjoining galleries of the Tuileries. Courbet exhibited there in 1849, and his early work was greeted with considerable critical and public acclaim. In 1849 he visited his family at Ornans to recover from the hectic life in Paris and, inspired again by his native countryside, produced two of his greatest paintings:

Biography
French artist, one of the developers of realism whose works were considered scandalous when he first exhibited. The son of a rural landowner, he studied at College Royal in Besanconb but went to Paris in 1840, exhibiting his first works at Salon in 1844. When he was refused exhibition in 1855, Courbet organized his own display. A visit to Germany in 1856 inspired a series of landscapes and hunt scenes. His official recognition began in the 1860's and in 1870 he refused the cross of the Legion d'Honneur that was offered to him by Napoleon III. He became involved in the Commune of Paris, in charge of all art museums, saving the city's collection from looting mobs; but was accused of allowing the destruction of Napoleon's Vendome column in 1871 and was imprisoned for his activities. He was sentenced in 1873 to pay for its reconstruction and he fled to Switzerland, near Vevey where he later died on 12/31/1877. Link to Wikipedia biography

Description
Unsentimental realism "I maintain," stated Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), "that painting is clearly a concrete art whose existence lies only in the representation of real and existing objects...." Courbet, who influenced and advised the fledgling Impressionists, was an outstanding representative of a naturalistic realism that highlights the contradictions and inequities in society. Revolutionary were Courbet’s style, with dark hues and heavy brushstrokes, and choice of subject—depictions the life of plain people treated in an unsentimental, down to earth manner. His influence was enormous during his lifetime; he was offered the cross of the Legion of Honor in 1872 but he refused it. A man always at odds with authority, be it artistic or political, Courbet became a member of the Paris Commune and was briefly imprisoned and forced to flee to Switzerland for the final years of his life.

Containing all of Gustave Courbet's (1819-1877) known lettersmore than 600this massive volume explodes the notion of the artist as a naive provincial, an image he himself constructed and carefully nurtured. Full of pithy remarks, colorful descriptions and cultural allusions, the correspondence reveals the French realist painter as an ambitious self-promoter who craved material success and was keenly aware of the artist's precarious status in a market-driven economy. Among Courbet's correspondents were Baudelaire, Monet, Hugo and anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Reflecting his development from spoiled teenager to symbol of political resistance, these energetic, offhand letters express Courbet's defiance of authority in all forms, his hatred of imperialism, his tweaking of the art establishment, participation... He went to Paris in 1839, and worked at the studio of Steuben and Hesse; but his independent spirit did not allow him to remain there long, as he preferred to work out his own way by the study of Spanish, Flemish and French painters. His first works, an Odalisque , suggested by Victor Hugo, and a Llia , illustrating George Sand, were literary subjects; but these he soon abandoned for the study of real life. Among other works he painted his own portrait with his dog, and
