LEONARDO da Vinci (b. 1452, Vinci, d. 1519, Amboise)
Biography
Life
Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence. He was the son of a wealthy Florentine notary and a peasant woman. In the mid-1460s the family settled in Florence, where Leonardo was given the best education that Florence, the intellectual and artistic center of Italy, could offer. He rapidly advanced socially and intellectually. He was handsome, persuasive in conversation, and a fine musician and improviser. About 1466 he was apprenticed as a garzone (studio boy) to Andrea del Verrocchio, the leading Florentine painter and sculptor of his day. In Verrocchio's workshop Leonardo was introduced to many activities, from the painting of altarpieces and panel pictures to the creation of large sculptural projects in marble and bronze. In 1472 he was entered in the painter's guild of Florence, and in 1476 he is still mentioned as Verrocchio's assistant. In Verrocchio's Baptism of Christ (circa 1470, Uffizi, Florence), the kneeling angel at the left of the painting is by Leonardo.

Leonardo da Vinci, the original Renaissance man, was born April 15, 1452 in the small Tuscan town of Vinci. Even though his father, a well known notary, did not marry his mother, a young peasant, Leonardo remained with his father in Vinci where he attended the local schools. Young Leonardo da Vinci’s beauty, grace and genius were well renowned throughout the countryside. Although his intelligence astounded his teachers, da Vinci was a fickle student. He would quickly become dissatisfied with one subject and then find a new passion, only to later abandon it. Unfortunately, this particular flaw would follow da Vinci throughout his career, and countless works would be left unfinished and ill-attempted. LEONARDO DA VINCI
Painter and Sculptor of Florence
THE heavens often rain down the richest gifts on human beings, naturally, but sometimes with lavish abundance bestow upon a single individual beauty, grace and ability, so that, whatever he does, every action is so divine that he distances all other men, and clearly displays how his genius is the gift of God and not an acquirement of human art. Men saw this in Leonardo da Vinci, whose personal beauty could not be exaggerated, whose every movement was grace itself and whose abilities were so extraordinary that he could readily solve every difficulty. He possessed great personal strength, combined with dexterity, and a spirit and courage invariably royal and magnanimous, and the fame of his name so spread abroad that, not only was he valued in his own day, but his renown has greatly increased since his death. Leonardo was placed, as I have said, with Andrea del Verrocchio in his childhood by Ser Piero, and his master happened to be painting a picture of St. John baptising Christ. Leonardo next did a very excellent Madonna, which afterwards belonged to Pope Clement VII. Among other things it contained a bowl of water with some marvellous flowers, the dew upon them seeming actually to be there, so that they looked more real than reality itself. For his good friend Antonio Segni he drew a Neptune on paper, with so much design and care that he seemed alive. The sea is troubled and his car is drawn by sea-horses, with the sprites, monsters, and south winds and other fine marine creatures. The drawing was given by Antonio's son Fabio to M. Giovanni Gaddi with this epigram:

Leonardo is one of the greatest examples of the union between humanism and science.
The original nucleus of this museum was our ample collection of models of his machines, which were reconstructed from his drawings.
Ever since the Museum was founded in 1953, it has provided a fundamental starting point for exploring the complex relationship between humanity and machines.

Exhibition
The Museum presents a travelling exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci as part of Milano Design City in Incheon, South Korea. The exhibition aims to communicate the close connection between Leonardo’s scientific work and his artistic research, interpreted in the light of its historical context.
The Cantiere Leonardo (“Leonardo Workshop”) embodies an aspiration and a duty: to tell the story of a man whose profound ability to observe nature and people allowed him to pursue his ambition of putting together a vast encyclopaedia of universal knowledge.
