Leonardo da Vinci
Biography
Leonardo da Vinci was the embodiment of the Renaissance ideal of the universal man, the first artist to attain complete mastery over all branches of art. He was a painter, sculptor, architect and engineer besides being a scholar in the natural sciences, medicine and philosophy.
He was born on the 15th of April, 1452 as an illegitimate son of the notary Ser Piero di Antonio da Vinci and his mother, a peasant woman Caterina, in a small town called Vinci, near Empoli, Tuscany. The first four years of his life were spent in a small village near Vinci with his mother. After 1457, he lived in his father's family, which soon moved to Florence. At the age of 15 he became an apprentice of the Florentine painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio and although in 1472 he entered the San Luca guild of painters in Florence, which would indicate that he had attained a degree of professional independence, he remained with Andrea del Verrocchio until 1480. Leonardo da Vinci
Introduction
Notes, with sketches and diagrams, by Leonardo da Vinci Everyone has heard of the Mona Lisa, but less well-known than Leonardo's painting are his notebooks. They show that he was a designer and scientist way beyond his time. He drew his visions of the aeroplane, the helicopter, the parachute, the submarine and the car. It was more than 300 years before many of his ideas were improved upon. The notebooks are where Leonardo recorded his own ideas as well as existing designs and philosophies for reference. They were never intended for publication. After his death in France on 2 May 1519, Francesco Melzi, his pupil, brought many of his manuscripts and drawings back to Italy. Melzi's heirs, who had no idea of the importance of the manuscripts, gradually disposed of them. Despite this, over 5,000 pages still exist in Leonardo's 'mirror writing', from right to left. Over the centuries the sheets have been split up, and few notebooks survive in anything like their original form. Some even remained undiscovered until 1966, when they were found by chance in the archives of the Biblioteca Nacional, Madrid. Renaissance paintings "The heavens often rain down the richest gifts on human beings, but sometimes they bestow with lavish abundance upon a single individual beauty, grace and ability, so that whatever he does, every action is so devine that he distances all other men, and clearly displays how his greatness is a gift of God and not an acquirement of human art. Men saw this in Leonardo."

Learning About Leonardo Steve Feld, John F. Kennedy High School, USA Abstract Leonardo's enigmatic Mona Lisa portrait, painted in the 1500's, coupled with numerous researched museum links served as the cultural catalyst for an ongoing evolving inner city Bronx high school student web research project. Begun in 1997, as part of the ThinkQuest Challenge, for developing a collaborative web project focused around a particular problem construct "Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling?" in partnership with peers from Borlange Sweden initially reacted, responded and reflected on Lillian Schwartz's research about the identity of Mona Lisa. Schwartz's contention, that Mona was Leonardo himself, led the students to include museum resources as part of their scientific inquiry into the validity of Schwartz's compelling thesis. The inner city Bronx HS students who created the web site had little if any personal experiences visiting actual Museum Resources in culturally rich NYC; but through the research process involved in investigating Schwartz's theory, students became online virtual museum visitors

  • Leonardo daVinci was born in 1452 in a small town named Vinci in Italy. He took the name of his town for his last name. He died in 1519 at age 67.
Interesting Facts:
  • Leonardo was a Renaissance painter and he painted realistically and used light and dark colors. He painted figures without outlining them. He used a style called "chiaroscurro" in which he used light and shadow to give his pictures a 3-D effect. He painted moods of happy, sad and other feelings. Most of his paintings are in Europe and only one in the United States.
Famous Works: Some of Leonardo's most famous paintings were "The Mona Lisa", "The Last Supper", and "The Virgin Of The Rocks."
  • The Mona Lisa was a painting of a lady with a mysterious look, especially her smile. The Last Supper shows Jesus with the twelve apostles. The Virgin Of The Rocks was important in the history or art because he painted his figures without outlining them.

Dr. N. Ventor, scientist-extraordinaire and inventor of a time machine, is also a big fan of Leonardo da Vinci. To thank you and your friend Carmine Chameleon for testing her time machine, she is showing you her collection of Leonardo's works. "This is one of Leonardo da Vinci's paintings," says Dr. Ventor. "He was one of the masters of the Renaissance "What's happening to the portrait!" exclaims Dr. Ventor. "It's disappeared and just left a blank canvas! Someone must have used my time machine! They've gone back and meddled in time! "Oh no!" exclaims Carmine. "Any changes in the past will change the present disappear right now! The three of you run to the time machine in the laboratory. "Look!" says Carmine. "The date's set to 1505 A.D. And the location is Leonardo da Vinci's workshop in Italy!" Dr. Ventor turns to you. "Now listen carefully, there's no time to spare! You and Carmine must follow the culprit back in time."
"If you find anything strange, bring it back in this bag. Even the smallest change might alter history forever!"
"Take this handbook. It should answer any questions about Leonardo and the Renaissance."
