FISH STILL LIFE
(Bodegón de Peces)

Oil on canvas. (50 x 55 cm.)
Salvador Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg (Florida)
Dalí, an expert in techniques and gifted with the the ability to draw, undertook every kind of study and drawing work. Academic realism was a good subject for him. This picture is a kind of still life which reflects the important supremacy of light and composition. CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO ENLARGE CUBIST SELF PORTRAIT (Autorretrato Cubista) Oil with cardboard collage on wood.(104 x 75 cm). Reina Sofía National Museum This cubist-style self portrait was painted by Dalí at the time he was being influenced by this trend. He was obviously influenced by Juan Gris: the newspapers, the pipe,... Dalí demonstrates his figurative tendency again and shows us it was very difficult for him to re-interpret reality . DalíŽs academicism led him to paint the point of reference as a conic perspective at the top of the picture, where all vertical lines joined. This was his justification of formal cubism. Salvador Dali was born in Figueras Spain on May 11th 1904. He had his first exhibition in 1918. In 1921 he joined the academy of arts in Madrid. He had his first solo exhibition in 1925 in Barcelona. In 1926 Dali made his first trip to Paris and met Picasso. In 1929 he seduced Paul Eluard's (a fellow surrealist) wife, which caused his father to break off contact with him. Around 1930 he evolved his paranoiac-critical method of painting. In 1932 he held the first surrealist exhibition in the USA. In 1938 Dali visited Freud in London, and subsequently draws a number of portraits of him. Then in 1939 the surrealist movement expelled Dali from there ranks. In 1940 Dali and his wife Gala moved to New York. In 1971 the DALI MUSUEM opens in Cleveland Ohio, with the E. and A. Reynolds Morse collection, which is eventually transferred to St. Petersburg Florida, it's current location. In 1982 his wife Gala died. Then in 1989, still suffering from the loss of his beloved wife, Dali suffers heart failure and dies. His 130 million dollar estate was willed to Spain, to be divided evenly between Madrid and Figueras.

Salvador Dali
"The only difference between me and a madman, is that I am not mad" Salvador Dali is my favourite artist. His most famous painting is probably 'The Persistance of Memory' (shown directly below). The following is a story of how he became involved in Surreallism. The Persistence of Memory Dali was born in 1904 in Figueras, Spain. Nine months before he was born, Salvadors older brother (also named Salvador) died. His parents believed that the new born Salvador was actually a re-incarnation of his dead brother and he even admitted that the ghostly memory of his lost brother had haunted him for his whole life. As a result of their fears over the death of their first son, Salvador Dali's parents gave him the royal treatment. Dali says in several of his writings that the dualistic stresses imposed upon him, that of living both as himself and his dead brother, caused him a particular obsession with decay and putrefication. Couple with Their Heads Full of Clouds Dali's early works as a teenager were predominantly of the landscapes which surrounded Cadaques and Fugueras. In 1917, Dali's father organised a small exhibition in their home, this was to be the first of many. In 1921, Dali's mother died. At this time, Dali mainly thought of himself as mainly an impressionist painter. Soon after, in 1922, Dali was accepted at the Acadamia de San Fernando, a school of painting, sculpture and engraving in Madrid. It was here that Dali became part of an emerging group of intellectuals and this had a profound effect on Dali.

Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí Domùnech, Marquis of Pubol or Salvador Felip Jacint Dalí Domùnech (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989), known popularly as Salvador Dalí , was a Catalan Spanish artist and one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. A skilled draftsman, best known for the striking, bizarre, and dreamlike images in his surrealist work. Dalí joined the surrealists in 1929, and participated in the rapid establishment of the visual style between 1930 and 1935. (Surrealism as a visual movement sought to expose psychological truth by stripping ordinary objects of their normal significance, in order to create a compelling image that was beyond ordinary formal organization, in order to evoke empathy from the viewer.)
