Henry Darger: Art and Selected Writings
By Michael Bonesteel
This is the most comprehensive Darger reference available. It starts with a 30 page essay by Michael Bonesteel and includes a lot of biographical information including the Elsie Paroubek story. I find the colors a little more saturated than the works I've seen in person, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It measures 11 inches by 10 inches in size and includes more than 200 pages of color reproductions, photos of his work area and a satisfying variety of excerpts from his writings, including The Realms, The History of My Life and Book of Weather Reports. Buy this one for yourself.
The Henry Darger Collection at the American Folk Art Museum
By Brooke Davis Anderson
The American Folk Art Museum is home to the Darger Study Center, housing all his manuscripts, 26 paintings and the archive of his source materials. This book measures 11 inches by 8.5 inches in size and includes 54 full color paintings and 19 pages of studies and archival materials, but no excerpts of Darger's writings. However, it includes a foreword by Kiyoko Lerner, an essay by Michel Thevoz and an afterword by Gerald C. Wertkin that give insight into his life. Buy this one as a gift.
In The Realms of the Unreal: The Mystery of Henry Darger
Directed by Jessica Yu
This well-made film gives a broad background to Darger's life and works. Narrated by Larry Pine and Dakota Fanning (whose voice is appropriately creepy) it avoids any psychological analysis or critical opinion but simply focuses on telling the story of Darger's life. The animation of Darger's paintings originally put me off a bit, but does work to keep the pace flowing. Also included is a 30 minute interview with Jessica Yu in which she talks about Darger's art and the making of the film. You can see an

Hammer REALMS OF THE UNREAL By Stephen Prokopoff Amid a thick accumulation of debris- including hundreds of Pepto-Bismol bottles, nearly a thousand balls of string, old newspapers, magazines and comic books, religious kitsch and much more- his landlord, the photographer Nathan Lerner, found a creative life's work: an enormous literary and pictorial production. The key element was a picaresque tale in 12 massive volumes composed of some 19,000 pages of legal-sized paper filled with single-spaced typing entitled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion

    by Jessica Shannon
In the film "The Realms of the Unreal", we are introduced to the artist Henry Darger. Henry Darger is a unique artist because his artwork and his writings were discovered after his death. In his tiny apartment, a story was found that was over 15,000 pages long, called the "The Realms of the Unreal". Along with the story was pages of accompanying artwork. These images are whimsical and fairy-tale like. From watching the film, the viewer learns that Henry Darger was a reclusive individual with a great deal of talent. Although he held a job as a janitor, he had no friends and no family. In his apartment, he created his own world with his writings and art. He would work on his art and writings everyday, for hours and hours. He was able to work through his own problematic childhood with the characters of the Vivian Girls in "The Realms of the Unreal". These girls were fearless, bold, and in numerous battles where they fought for the safety and well-being of children. This was a theme in Darger's own life, possibly caused by his stay at the Lincoln asylum when he was a young boy. Darger's artwork is considered outsider art or lowbrow art. His techniques were ahead of his time. He collected trash from around his neighborhood, such as old magazines, children's books, and newspapers. He then took these images and put them onto paper by tracing, collage, and photo enlargement. Some of his favorite figures were the Coppertone Girl and Little Annie Rooney. The viewer can see that Darger has a natural gift for composition and the brilliant use of color in his watercolors. His scenes are whimsical, ironic, and full of wonder and delight. Each image is an own world in itself. The images of daring escapes, mighty battles, and painful torture are reminiscent of events in Catholic history. The text makes it clear that the child victims are heroic martyrs like the early saints.

Henry Darger
by E.Tage Larsen This is neither tawny, cobble-road delusion nor rabbit-holed excursion, and there's no moral at the end. Those are the gateways and postscripts which make adventures into the unknown a little more comfortable. They are the tenets of children's book folklore and, unfortunately, there is no clever transition into the otherworld of Outsider Artist Henry Darger; in fact, you aren't even invited. Last winter's Henry Darger retrospective at the Museum of American Folk Art was a monument to the most obsessively perverse act of genius swingin' under the big top. My introduction to Outsider Art was through the virtue and great patience of a collector friend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Outsider Art is a blanket term used to imply unschooled artists whose particular dalliance or psychosis is a catalyst to brilliance. Salt Lake City, under the rule of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons, certainly brandishing its own aberrance, attracts a lot of oddball allegiances to counteract the ubiquitous religious fervor. I was surprised at how much of the fringe element stopped through on its way to everywhere else. Having spent the '90s being anywhere but Salt Lake City, I take it as no small irony that my reintroduction to Outsider Art would be in the form of the Henry Darger exhibition at the Museum of American Folk Art, located across from Lincoln Center, on 65th and Columbus, sharing the building with the only New York City ward of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints.

henry darger
A very puzzling story. Henry Darger was born in 1892 and died in 1973. He led a reclusive life after having fled institutions for the feeble-minded. After he died his landlord discovered an enormous artistic oeuvre in Henry's raunchy Chicago room. Amid the debris he found hundreds of gigantic watercolour paintings, illustrating a twelve volume fantasy novel Henry had written in his lifetime. Read all (?) about it on this website and don't forget to click on the paintings, to be seen and enjoyed in resolutions of thousands of pixels. And if that's not enough for you, you might want to read this 3 page Salon article : "The late Henry Darger is a darling of the outsider art world, a dishwasher who created a vast epic tale of naked little girls. But was he also something more sinister?" Questions, questions, after reading that one. Whether Darger was a murderer, no one will ever know. But did Nathan Lerner really not know about Darger's art before he died? Living in his house? Or did he just sit it out, waiting for the loot? Posted by eliane at March 22, 2005 09:09 PM

1900 - Darger's own report, his father, Henry Sr., was kind to him, and they lived together until this year. In that year the crippled and impoverished Darger Sr. had to be taken to live at St. Augustine's Catholic Mission home and his son was placed in a Catholic boys' home. Darger Sr. died in 1905
1930 - Darger settled into a second-floor room on Chicago's North Side. It was in this room, more than 40 years later, after his death in 1973, that Darger's extraordinary secret life was discovered.
1939 - The sequel to In the Realms of the Unreal is titled Crazy House: Further Adventures in Chicago. Begun in this year, it is a Stephen King-like tale of a house that is possessed by demons and haunted by ghosts, or perhaps has an evil consciousness of its own, like the hotel in The Shining.
