In the 1780s his cerebral brand of historical painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity towards a classical austerity and severity, chiming with the moral climate of the final years of the ancien régime. David became an active supporter of the French Revolution and friend of Maximilien Robespierre , and was effectively a dictator of the arts under the French Republic. The Death of Marat , perhaps David's most famous painting, has been called the Pietà of the revolution. It is not an accident that this work is described in religious terms, as the Revolution increasingly sought to replace the iconography of the Catholic Church with that of reason as an abstract idea that Robespierre attempted to have embodied in the ill-fated "Goddess of Reason." Imprisoned after Robespierre's fall from power, he aligned himself with yet another political regime upon his release, that of

He was a distant relative of Boucher, who perhaps helped his early artistic progress as a pupil under Vien (1765). He won the Prix de Rome in 1774 and travelled with his master to Rome where he spent six years. It was during this period (1775-81), that he abandoned the grand manner of his early work, with its Baroque use of lighting and composition for a stark, highly finished and morally didactic style. This was influenced by the ideas then current in Rome (Winckelmann) and by artists such as Hamilton who were already experimenting with a Neoclassical idiom. In 1784 the change of style was confirmed by the Oath of the Horatii Oath of the Tennis Court , and successfully in his pieta-like portrayal of the Death of Marat Intervention of the Sabine Women (1799, Paris, Louvre), a work which strained his Classicism in the search for Greek purity. In 1799 Napoleon gained power, and David gained a new hero. He recorded the general and later the Emperor in numerous propaganda pieces (e.g.

Jacques-Louis David
David, Jacques-Louis (1748-1825), French painter, who introduced the neoclassical style in France (Neoclassical Art and Architecture). He was its leading exemplar from the time of the French Revolution (1789-1799) to the fall of the French emperor Napoleon I in 1815.
. Early Years
David was born into a prosperous middle-class family in Paris and studied at the Académie Royale under the painter Joseph-Marie Vien. Vien aroused in the young David an enthusiasm for classical antiquity and for the 17th-century French painter Nicolas Poussin, in opposition to the prevailing rococo style. David won the Prix de Rome in 1774, and on the ensuing trip to Italy he was strongly influenced by classical art and by the classically inspired work of Poussin.
David quickly evolved his own individual neoclassical style, drawing subject matter from ancient sources and basing form and gesture on Roman sculpture. His famous Oath of the Horatii (1784-1785, Louvre, Paris) was consciously intended as a proclamation of the new neoclassical style in which dramatic lighting, ideal forms, and clarity of gesture are emphasized. Presenting a lofty moralistic (and by implication patriotic) theme, the work became the principal model for noble and heroic historical painting of the next two decades.
. Revolutionary
. Portrait Painter
David, throughout his career, was also a prolific portraitist. Smaller in scale and more intimately human than his larger works, his portraits, such as the famous Madame Récamier (1800, Louvre), show great technical mastery and understanding of character. Many modern critics consider them his best work, especially because they are free from the moralizing messages and sometimes stilted technique of his neoclassical works.

Jump to: navigation search David, Jacques-Louis (1748-1825): French Painter. Jacques-Louis David was an artistic and political revolutionary who founded the Neo-Classical style. He played a central role in the events of his time as the artistic spokesman of the French Revolution and the Republic, and he was the official artist for Bonaparte, Napoleon . His artistic innovations contributed to many nineteenth-century styles through the evolution of Neo-Classicism and the introduction of Romanticism and Realism. David was born into an affluent and well educated family of craftsmen. After choosing a career in art, he went for instruction to his grandmother's cousin, the Rococo artist, Boucher, François . However, the latter was disinclined to take new pupils, and David entered the studio of the Neo-Classical history painter, Joseph-Marie Vien (1716-1809). In 1766, at a time aesthetic tastes were changing, David enrolled in the official school at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. The government sponsored institution for the instruction of artists and the perpetuation of officially sanctioned styles was turning away from the Rococo, due in part to its association with a corrupt aristocracy. Revolutionary ideas, encouraged by the writings of Diderot, Denis

David, Jacques-Louis born 30 April 1748 - died 29 December 1825 Jacques-Louis David born 30 April 1748 - died 29 December 1825 DAVID, JACQUES LOUIS (1748-1825) , French painter, was born in Paris on the 30th of April 1748. His father was killed in a duel, when the boy was but nine years old. His education was begun at the College des Quatre Nations, where he obtained a smattering of the classics; but, his artistic talent being already obvious, he was soon placed by his guardian in the studio of Fran?ois Boucher. Boucher speedily realized that his own erotic style did not suit the lad's genius, and recommended him to J. M. Vien, the pioneer of the classical reaction in painting. Under him David studied for some years, and, after several attempts to win the Prix de Rome, at last succeeded in 1775, with his Loves of Antiochus and Stratonice

Jacques-Louis David studied under Joseph-Marie Viens, his early training influencing him to paint in a rococo style. From 1775 to 1780, David studied in Italy and developed a stronger, more passionate, and patriotic approach. His paintings around this time were also political, as David had joined the National Convention during the French Revolution. Because of this, David was almost executed at the demise of his group, but was saved by his royalist wife. Still engaged with politics, David became involved with Napoleon, but was forced to move to Brussels when he was overthrown.
