In Degas we have a highly intelligent man who from early youth haunted the great art galleries and knew Italy by heart. Fastidious, sophisticated and mistrustful of the world at large, he was also cantankerous and disdainful. He spoke of himself as "a die-hard, incorrigible reactionary." Nevertheless he struck out new lines; notably he deliberately broke up classical composition, lowered the horizon-line, and scored surfaces with horizontal strokes. Exhibitions 1893, Gal. DEGAS Edgar Biography and Painting
Degas Edgar
Degas, Edgar
Degas, (Hilaire Germain) Edgar (1834-1917), French painter and sculptor, whose innovative composition, skillful drawing, and perceptive analysis of movement made him one of the masters of modern art in the late 19th century.
Degas is usually classed with the impressionists, and he exhibited with them in seven of the eight impressionist exhibitions. However, his training in classical drafting and his dislike of painting directly from nature produced a style that represented a related alternative to impressionism.
Degas was born into a well-to-do banking family on July 19, 1834, in Paris.
His study of Japanese prints led him to experiment with unusual visual angles and asymmetrical compositions. His subjects often appear cropped at the edges, as in Ballet Rehearsal (1876, Glasgow Art Galleries and Museum). In Woman with Chrysanthemums (1865, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City), the female subject of the picture is pushed into a corner of the canvas by the large central bouquet of flowers.
In the 1880s, when his eyesight began to fail, Degas began increasingly to work in two new media that did not require intense visual acuity: sculpture and pastel. In his sculpture, as in his paintings, he attempted to catch the action of the moment, and his ballet dancers and female nudes are depicted in poses that make no attempt to conceal their subjects' physical exertions. His pastels are usually simple compositions containing only a few figures. He was obliged to depend on vibrant colors and meaningful gestures rather than on precise lines and careful detailing, but, in spite of such limitations, these works are eloquent and expressive and have a simple grandeur unsurpassed by any of his other works.

Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar
Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar (b. July 19, 1834, Paris, Fr.d. Sept. 27, 1917, Paris)
French artist, acknowledged as the master of drawing the human figure in motion. Degas worked in many mediums, preferring pastel to all others. He is perhaps best known for his paintings, drawings, and bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses. The art of Degas reflects a concern for the psychology of movement and expression and the harmony of line and continuity of contour. These characteristics set Degas apart from the other impressionist painters, although he took part in all but one of the 8 impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Degas was the son of a wealthy banker, and his aristocratic family background instilled into his early art a haughty yet sensitive quality of detachment. As he grew up, his idol was the painter Jean Auguste Ingres , whose example pointed him in the direction of a classical draftsmanship, stressing balance and clarity of outline. After beginning his artistic studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Ingres, he started classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts but left in 1854 and went to Italy. He stayed there for 5 years, studying Italian art, especially Renaissance works.

He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman , he is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes . His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and depiction of human isolation.

See also: Impressionism VIEW IMAGE LIST "...Aspects of Degas's work - mainly, his ballet paintings from the 1880S - have long been popular with a broad audience; too much so for their own good. But he has never been a "popular" artist like the wholly inferior Auguste Renoir , whose Paris-Boston retrospective in 1985 beguiled the crowds and bored everyone else. Degas was much harder to take, with his spiny intelligence (never Renoir's problem), his puzzling mixtures of categories, his unconventional cropping and, above all, his "coldness" - that icy, precise objectivity which was one of the masks of his unrelenting power of aesthetic deliberation. Besides, the long continuities of his work have not always been obvious. The figure you think he skimmed from the street like a Kodak turns out to have been there already, in Ingres or Watteau or some half-forgotten seventeenth-century draftsman who suited his purposes. Degas was the most modern of artists, but his kind of modernity, which entailed a passionate working relationship with the remote as well as the recent past, hardly exists today. How we would have bored him, with our feeble jabber of postmodernist "appropriation"!

Edgar Degas
biography, books, exhibition Degas at Harvard

Article added on November 1, 2005
In his NYT review of the exhibition Degas at Harvard , Holland Cotter describes Edgar Degas as "a contrary, difficult man: a sociable misanthrope, a shy egomaniac, a cosmopolitan nationalist, an egalitarian snob. As an artist, he was constantly pulled between aesthetic extremes: reaction and revolution, past and present, fantasy and life."
Degas showed little concern for the established techniques of the Parisian art academies. He experimented with new techniques, e.g. from Japan and new subjects, previously ignored by the art elite.
The French painter and sculptor Edgar Degas was born Hilaire Germain Edgar De Gas in Paris on July 19, 1834. He was the oldest son of Auguste De Gas, a wealthy French banker with Neapolitan origins, and Célestine, his Creole wife from New Orleans. The family name "Degas" had been changed to "De Gas" in order to sound more aristocratic. Edgar went back to the original spelling in the 1870s.
Degas' mother died young, in 1847, leaving young Edgar in a state of shock. From 1845 to 1852, he frequented the lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. After this classical education, he enrolled at the faculty of law at the Sorbonne in 1853.

Biography
French artist, a painter and pastelist, sculptor and photographer. He was considered one of the greatest male French draftsman of the 19th century. His father was the Italian banker, Auguste De Gas, the head of the family's Paris bank branch that had its headquarters in Naples, Italy. Edgar's dad was a cultured man with a love for art and music and he was raised in a Parisian bourgeois household with two brothers. He was given a classical education and studied law. Adept at drawing, he soon put law aside to become an artist. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under the great French neo-classical painter, Ingres. He practiced in the technical style of academic art and spent many years copying the art works in the Louvre and the Bibliotheque Nationale. In Rome, he copied the Renaissance masters to further his education in the technique of the Old Masters style. He painted self-portraits and members of his family. In 1858, his early masterpiece was the group portrait, "The Bellelli Family." It was a painting of his pregnant Aunt Laura Bellelli, her husband and two daughters.
