Otto Dix presents the work of the controversial
German artist renowned for his unflinching
portrayal of life during war time and the
aftermath of violence. The celebrated German artist Otto Dix, a volunteer for the
German Army during World War I, went on to create some of
the most powerful anti-war images of the modern age. His
work also includes unsettling depictions of civilian life in the
Weimar Republic following World War I. This book examines every aspect of Dix s career, from his expressionist work to his gradual embrace of classically influenced realism. Though many of Dix s works were destroyed under the Third Reich, a number of his rarely seen landscapes from that era a genre forced on him by the Nazi government as well as later works of religious allegory are included here. The result is a timeline of

Deutsch English Otto Dix Stiftung Dix in Museen ...

Biography:

After studying realism in Dresden, Dix was drafted into WWI and profoundly affected by his experiences with trench warfare. He then continued to study in Dresden and Dusseldorf, creating large-scale anti-war prints and collages. He later began dealing with other social messages, depicting beggars, prostitutes and veterans in his paintings. Outraged by the Weimar Republic and the Nazis, Dix began to criticize their politics in his work, and was therefore deemed as a degenerate and forced to resign from his teaching position. He then adopted a less controversial style, painting religious subjects in romantic and eventually expressionist style.

Mysticism Defined by Rudolf Otto
In his, The Idea of the Holy , Rudolf Otto coins the word "numinous" define the mystical experience (p.6-7). Numinous comes from a Latin word numen. Although he gives no further explanation on the choice of this word, he does comment extensively upon the numinous experience. " [The experience is] inexpressible, ineffabile...." (p.5) The numinous experience tends to have these attributes: The element of "awe"fullness (p.13) The element of overpoweringness (p. 19)

37. Rudolf Otto
An account of Otto s relation to Kantian-Friesian thought, and the encumbrance which that rationalistic tradition may have been for him.
http://www.friesian.com/otto.htm
Rudolf Otto (1869-1937)
Using Jakob Fries's epistemological scheme of Wissen, Glaube, and Ahndung , "Understanding, Belief, and Aesthetic Sense," (to use Kent Richter's translation), Ruldolf Otto expands the meaning of Ahndung beyond the merely aesthetic by introducing the category of numinosity , which is the quality of sacred or holy objects, persons, or experiences in religion. Although Otto is often classified as a theoretician of mysticism , "numinosity" is not fundamentally a theory of mystical experiences, because every practionier of any religion regards certain things as sacred to that religion. The "sacred" and the "holy," and the "unclean" or "polluted," are categories that apply (non-metaphorically) to peculiarly religious objects in an entirely universal and cross-cultural manner. Otto's greatest limitation is in fact the residual rationalism of Kant and Fries. This is expressed best by Otto himself, in the foreward to his famous The Idea of the Holy Das Heilige Before I ventured upon this field of inquiry I spent many years of study upon the rational aspect of that supreme Reality we call "God," and the results of my work are contained in my books
