Dove, Arthur Garfield , 1880C1946, American painter, b. Canandaigua, N.Y. Early in his career he did commercial illustration in New York City. Following a European trip (1907C9), he adopted an abstract style that flowered in the 1930s into fluid, poetic canvases based on forms in nature. Dove has subsequently been recognized as a precursor of the abstract expressionists. Examples of his work are Rise of the Full Moon and Pozzuoli Red (Phillips Gall., Washington, D.C.). Home ... Arthur (Garfield) Dove
Home Library Art Encyclopedia b Canandaigua, NY, 2 Aug 1880; d Long Island, NY, 23 Nov 1946). American painter. He worked as an illustrator in New York (1903-7). In 1907 he travelled to Paris and southern France, where under the influence of Henri Matisse and Paul C?zanne he experimented with a style characterized by bright colours, curvilinear rhythms and non-naturalistic representation. On his return to the USA in 1909, his association with Alfred Stieglitz began. In 1910 he moved to a farm in Westport, CT. At this time he created some of the first distinctively non-representational works produced by an American, for example the Abstractions series (all priv. cols, see Morgan, pp. 100-103). The ten pastels that he showed in his first one-man exhibition at the 291 Gallery (1912) consisted of simplified, stylized motifs, the circular and saw-tooth forms of which interpenetrated and overlapped to create an organic Futurism. In them he expressed his belief that objects are not discrete, isolated entities, but active forces whose rhythms are in constant interplay with their environments. Notable awards Copley Medal Arthur Cayley (16 August 1821 – 26 January 1895) was a British mathematician . He helped found the modern British school of pure mathematics As a child, Cayley enjoyed solving complex math problems for amusement. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge , where he excelled in Greek French German , and Italian , as well as mathematics . He worked as a lawyer for 14 years. He proved the Cayley-Hamilton theorem —that every square matrix is a root of its own characteristic polynomial . He was the first to define the concept of a group in the modern way—as a set with a binary operation satisfying certain laws. Formerly, when mathematicians spoke of "groups", they had meant

51. Arthur Schopenhauer
An essay by Kelley L. Ross on this philosopher, considering his relation to his own and later times.
http://www.friesian.com/arthur.htm
Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860)
Certainly one of the greatest philosophers of the 19th century, Schopenhauer seems to have had more impact on literature (e.g. Thomas Mann) and on people in general than on academic philosophy. Perhaps that is because, first, he wrote very well, simply and intelligibly (unusual, we might say, for a German philosopher, and unusual now for any philosopher), second, he was the first Western philosopher to have access to translations of philosophical material from India , both Vedic and Buddhist , by which he was profoundly affected, to the great interest of many, and, third, his concerns were with the dilemmas and tragedies, in a religious or existential sense, of real life, not just with abstract philosophical problems. As Jung said: He was the first to speak of the suffering of the world, which visibly and glaringly surrounds us, and of confusion, passion, evil all those things which the [other philosophers] hardly seemed to notice and always tried to resolve into all-embracing harmony and comprehensiblility. Here at last was a philosopher who had the courage to see that all was not for the best in the fundaments of the universe.

The year is 1428. In a castle in France, an eleven-year-old boy of nobility hurries through the halls and into the library, where he fulfills his appointment with his teacher, Master Foulque, who is also the family scribe. The young lad anxiously pleads with Foulque to tell him stories about the legends of King Arthur and the escapades of the brave Knights of the Round Table. Foulque obliges and begins to unravel the storied history of Arthurian legend in Fifth Century England, where myths and reality are often difficult to distinguish. Known as Britain in the Fifth Century, England had been conquered by Roman legions, who had spread their Christian beliefs to these remote lands and established ruling provinces. The troubled Roman Empire at home began to crumble, and the Romans abandoned Britain. Without the protection of the Roman legions, the provinces were attacked, pillaged, and burned by Saxon barbarians. What resulted was a Britain that became a land without law, where survival of the strongest was the way of life.
