Artist: DUCHAMP, MARCEL Title: The Entire Musical Work Label: DOG W/A BONE Format: CD Price: Catalog #: DWAB 001CD Originally issued in 2000, this is the first release from this 20th century composer's label, based out of the Paula Cooper Gallery in NYC; performed by Petr Kotik 's S.E.M. Ensemble , with John Cage on one piece. This CD was recorded in 1987 by S.E.M. (including Ben Neill on trumpet) and was originally released in 2000; the Ampersand version was recorded in 1976. Duchamp's often overlooked musical work was composed for the most part between 1912 and 1921. His method was based on chance and represented a radical departure from the way music was done at the time. The Entire Musical Work includes the artist's complete oeuvre, namely "Erratum Musical" (For Three Voices), "La Marie mise nu par ses clibataires mme," "Erratum Musical" (in two different versions for player piano and chamber ensemble), and the conceptual piece "Sculpture Musicale" (with a special version performed by John Cage). The liner notes contain reproductions of Duchamp's handwritten scores, as well as photographs of the instrumental "apparatus" used to create the second version of "La Marie mise nu par ses clibataires mme (a funnel, seven open top cars and six sets of balls)." Also included is a mesostic (a poem legible both horizontally and vertically) by John Cage.

    Life:
A man of great humor and wit, Duchamp loved nothing more than jokes, puns and challenging others to think beyond conventional wisdom. He is best known for introducing the ready-made (or "found") object into visual art, co-founding Dada and being affiliated with the Surrealists. Perhaps his greatest contribution, though, is that he almost singlehandedly shifted the focus of art away from the strictly visual and onto the mental. Duchamp's enormous impact on Contemporary Art cannot be overstated.

Duchamp, Marcel (1887-1968) Considered a genius by some, an irreverent prankster by others, Marcel Duchamp was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Born on July 28, 1887, near Blainville, France, Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp revolutionized how modern art is conceived, made, and interpreted. Above all, his life and art reflect a desire to turn things upside down and to break down all linguistic, sexual, and social restraints. He prized creative independence and developed a distinctive anti-art stance, believing that artistic standards of any kind are meaningless.

    SELECTED WORKS
Marcel Duchamp, French Dada artist, whose small but controversial output exerted a strong influence on the development of 20th-century avant-garde art. Born on July 28, 1887, in Blainville, brother of the artist Raymond Duchamp-Villon and half brother of the painter Jacques Villon, Duchamp began to paint in 1908. After producing several canvases in the current mode of Fauvism, he turned toward experimentation and the avant-garde, producing his most famous work, Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (Philadelphia Museum of Art) in 1912; portraying continuous movement through a chain of overlapping cubistic figures, the painting caused a furor at New York City's famous Armory Show in 1913. He painted very little after 1915, although he continued until 1923 to work on his masterpiece, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1923, Philadelphia Museum of Art), an abstract work, also known as The Large Glass, composed in oil and wire on glass, that was enthusiastically received by the surrealists. In sculpture, Duchamp pioneered two of the main innovations of the 20th century
