41. Les "Ready-made" De Marcel Duchamp : Un Jeu Avec Les Représentations Mentales
Cet article pr sente la mani re dont les ready-made de Marcel Duchamp jouent avec les repr sentations mentales, en analysant l volution de ses oeuvres.
http://www.philophil.com/philosophie/representation/Analyse/ready-made.htm
Marcel Duchamp
Les "Ready-made" jouent avec nos représentations mentales. "Il n'y a pas de hasard, il n'y a que des rendez-vous. "
Paul Eluard.

Biography:

Marcel Duchamp studied in Paris, where he acquired the stimulus of Cézanne and the Fauves. He later combined the properties of Cubism and Futurism, to create a revolutionary piece entitled Nude Descending a Staircase. Duchamp was also the creator of the ready-made in 1913 , an everyday object transformed by its context. For example, in Duchamp’s 1917 piece, Fountain, he exhibited a unmodified urinal as his sculpture. In 1915, he moved to New York and became an influential figure in American Dadaism. His later works were intending to be playful and humorous, but also rebellions against the stiff nature of the art world.

Biography
French artist best known for his irreverent work and enigmatic persona. He introduced a new mode of artistic interpretation of reality by which everyday objects became vehicles for ideas, becoming a major influence on the Dada movement. His art could easily be summarized as 'modern contempt;' he felt that sacrosanct attitudes stifled creativity, especially among young artists. His first mature work, "Nude Descending a Staircase" caused immense controversy when it was exhibited in Paris in 1912, then in New York, in 1913. His irreverence was also shown by putting a moustache and goatee on a Mona Lisa postcard, and entitling it with a French obscenity. Witty and complicated, Duchamp married late in life, at 67, to Alexina Sattler, the former daughter-in-law of Henri Matisse. They were married 14 years until his death.

Jasper Johns, from Marcel Duchamp: An Appreciation
Customer Reviews
Marcel Duchamp interviewed late in life. This interview with Marcel Duchamp by Pierre Cabanne provides clarity to the myth that surrounds Duchamp and his non art. Duchamp gave the interview about 2 years before his death. He answers directly and in context the meaning of his work and non work. Others books attempt to tell us not only what his production means but try to tell us what his words mean as well. This books makes clear that Duchamp did not like the art world (although he used it to his advantage), he did not like art that appealed to the eye, he did not make art, he amused himself making objects and he played games. Its an honest interview and needs no interpreters. You can understand the valve of this mans ideas and what they mean to current conceptual art. Or is it conceptual non art.

Assessment
As artist and anti-artist, Marcel Duchamp is considered one of the leading spirits of 20th-century painting. With the exception of the "Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2," however, his works were ignored by the public for the greater part of his life. Until 1960 only such avant-garde groups as the Surrealists claimed that he was important, while to "official" art circles and sophisticated critics he appeared to be merely an eccentric and something of a failure. He was more than 70 years old when he emerged in the United States as the secret master whose entirely new attitude toward art and society, far from being negative or nihilistic, had led the way to Pop art, Op art, and many of the other movements embraced by younger artists everywhere. Not only did he change the visual arts but he also changed the mind of the artist. ( R.Le. The Green Box Rotoreliefs (1935); "Door for Gradiva" (1937; replica, Dieter Keller Collection, Stuttgart, Ger.); Nine Etchings for the Large Glass and Related Works by A. Schwarz (1967; A. Schwarz Collection);
