edit Early life
Durand was born in and eventually died in Maplewood, New Jersey (then called Jefferson Village), the eighth of eleven children; his father was a watchmaker and a silversmith. He lived in what is now known as the Durand-Hedden House and Garden , which is now designated as a historic landmark. Durand was apprenticed to an engraver from 1812 to 1817, later entering into a partnership the owner of the firm, who asked him to run the firm's New York branch. He engraved Declaration of Independence for John Trumbull in 1823, which established Durand's reputation as one of the country's finest engravers. Durand helped organize the New York Drawing Association in 1825, which would become the National Academy of Design ; he would serve the organization as president from 1845 to 1861.

Asher Durand spent the first two decades of his working life as an engraver. During the he turned to painting portraits, and then, encouraged by Thomas Cole, to landscapes. By the Durand was concentrating on landscapes exclusively. Working in New York City, he became a close colleague of Cole, and served as president of the National
Academy of Design. He regularly ventured into remote areas of the Catskill, Adirondack, and White Mountains to make sketches, which he used in the landscapes composed in his studio during the winter. These works evolved from staged, largely imagined idylls to ennobled portraits of specific places, compelling in breadth and detail, showing greater focus on literal transcription of nature and less reliance on conventional formula. Durand enjoyed a productive painting career that lasted through the Although he enjoyed the respect of his fellow artists, his later years were described by his son as clouded by the American public's declining appreciation for native artists and subjects in favor of those from abroad.1 During a tribute staged by his friends in the painter John F. Weir said of him, "I think we do too little ... to show our respect for the pioneers of our pathways which have now become highways."

(b . Aug. 21, 1796, Jefferson Village, N.J., U.S.d. Sept. 17, 1886, Jefferson Village), U.S. painter, engraver, and illustrator, one of the founders of the Hudson River school q.v .) of landscape painting. He was apprenticed in 1812 to an engraver; by 1823 his reputation was established with his engraving of John Trumbull's painting "Declaration of Independence." For the next decade he continued to do engraved reproductions of paintings by American artists ( e.g. , "Ariadne" by John Vanderlyn). He also illustrated gift books, or annuals, and engraved a popular series of 72 portraits of famous contemporary Americans. With his brother Cyrus Durand (1787-1868), he formed a partnership for a banknote engraving company. Cyrus invented machines for the mechanical drawing of lines that revolutionized the art of currency engraving, while Asher's graphic work for the Federal Bureau of Printing and Engraving was influential in establishing the design tradition and many of the pictorial and ornamental devices for U.S. paper currency. After 1835 he devoted himself chiefly to portraiture, painting several U.S. presidents and other Americans of political and social prominence. In 1840-41 he visited Europe to study the work of the old masters. After his return, he painted Romantic landscapes of the

HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL
T he first coherent school of American art, the Hudson River painters, helped to shape the mythos of the American landscape. Beginning with the works of Thomas Cole (1801-1848) and Asher B. Durand (1796-1886) and evolving into the Luminist and late Romantic schools, landscape painting was the prevalent genre of 19th century American art. THE OXBOW by Thomas Cole With roots in European Romanticism and with correspondences to European painters such as the Nazarenes and Caspar David Friedrich in Germany or John Constable and Joseph Turner in England, the Hudson River painters, nonetheless, set about to heed Emerson's call "to ignore the courtly Muses of Europe" and define a distinct vision for American art. The artists who came to maturity in the years of egalitarian Jacksonian democracy and expansion translated these ideals into an aesthetic that was sweeping and spontaneous. Like the vast nation that lay before them, which they celebrated not chauvinistically but with a sense of awe for its majestic natural resources and a feeling of optimism for the huge potential it held, the Hudson River painters depicted a New World wilderness in which man, minuscule as he was beside the vastness of creation, nevertheless retained that divine spark that completed the circle of harmony.

His frail health exempted him from working on the family farm; instead, he helped his father, a watchmaker and silversmith. Following an apprenticeship to engraver Peter Maverick from 1812 to 1817, Durand entered into full partnership with Maverick and ran the New York branch of the Newark-based firm. The partnership dissolved in 1820 in a dispute concerning Durand's acceptance of John Trumbull's commission to engrave The Declaration of Independence , which Durand had apparently taken on without deferring to Maverick's position as senior partner. (Maverick, who interpreted the act as a violation of their partnership agreement, heatedly accused Durand of trying to sabotage his career.) The completion of the work in 1823 established Durand's reputation as one of the country's finest engravers. An active member of the New York art community, Durand was instrumental in organizing the New-York Drawing Association in 1825 (later the National Academy of Design, which he served as president from 1845 to 1861) and the Sketch Club in 1829 (later the Century Association). During the late 1820s and early 1830s, when his interest gradually shifted from engraving to oil painting, he demonstrated a growing competence in portraiture and genre subjects. With the encouragement of his friend and patron Luman Reed, Durand ended his engraving career in 1835.
