Ensor, James Biography
Belgian painter, whose unique portrayals of grotesque humanity made him a principal precursor of 20th-century expressionism and surrealism. Ensor was born in Oostende, Belgium, and, except for three years spent at the Brussels Academy, from 1877 to 1880, he lived in Oostende all his life. Ensor was an acknowledged master by the time he was 20 years old. After a youthful infatuation with the art of Rembrandt and Rubens, he adopted the vivacious brushstroke of the French Impressionists.
Ensor's early oil paintings were of traditional subjects-landscapes, still lifes, portraits, interiors-painted in deep, rich colors and lighted by subdued but vibrant light. In the mid-1880s, influenced by the bright color of the impressionists and the grotesque imagery of earlier Flemish masters such as Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Ensor turned toward avant-garde themes and styles. He took his subject matter principally from Oostende's holiday crowds, which filled him with revulsion and disgust. Portraying individuals as clowns or skeletons or replacing their faces with carnival masks, he represented humanity as stupid, smirking, vain, and loathsome.
Ensor deliberately used harsh, garish colors and violent, broken brushstrokes to heighten the violent effect of his subjects. His oil paintings had an important influence on 20th-century painting, his lurid subject matter paving the way for surrealism and Dada, and his techniques leading directly to expressionism. He died in Oostende, where there is now a museum devoted to his artwork.

Ensor was born April 13, 1860, in Ostend, Belgium, and, except for three years spent at the Brussels Academy, from 1877 to 1880, he lived in Ostend all his life. His early works were of traditional subject landscapes, still lifes, portraits, interiors painted in deep, rich colors and lighted by subdued but vibrant light. Portraying individuals as clowns or skeletons or replacing their faces with carnival masks, he represented humanity as stupid, smirking, vain, and loathsome. Outstanding in this vein is his immense canvas Christ's Entry Into Brussels in 1889 (1888, J. Paul Getty Center, Los Angeles, California).
Ensor deliberately used harsh, garish colors and violent, broken brushstrokes to heighten the violent effect of his subjects. As a rule Expressionists are gloomy people who rarely smile, and only with an effort. Ensor, however, is a genial Expressionist; even of death he makes a jest. His art reminds us of those sumptuous Still Lifes painted by his Flemish forerunners, in which upon a table piled with good fare, one sees a skull (hence the name vanitas for a picture of this kind). For Ensor painting is not the handmaid of any utopian vision. He uses it for gently scolding a world whose imperfections he discerns, but of which he never can quite despair. While Redon invents a private and peculiar wonderland, Ensor is always under the spell of his own childhood, which, fortunately perhaps, has for him no spurious "glamour." No doubt it was peopled by the most attractive fairies, but there were also spiders, ogres, even macabre stuffed Chinese. In short the fairyland of which he has the freedom is highly realistic. And his robust health has seen him cheerfully through a life that was by no means "roses all the way," up to the comfortable age of ninety. Date of birth and death:
Nationality: Belgian
Uploaded artworks: About the artist:
In the mid-1880s, Ensor suffered from an ulcer and from a personal crisis: his family forbade him to marry the woman he loved. He returned to painting religious subjects and plunged to the depths of despair when he decided to sell the contents of his studio in the 1890s. After the turn of the century, Ensor finally won acclaim and respectability. He was knighted and given the title of Baron. The 1908 publication of a book about his life and works confirmed his standing and reputation. In later years, he wrote music, designed sets for ballets, and continued to paint until his death at eighty-nine. Between Street and Mirror: The Drawings of James Ensor
by James Ensor from University of Minnesota Press
Early in his career, Belgian painter James Ensor (1860-1949) broke away from Impressionism, rejecting its prettiness in favor of an original, highly dramatic style. Incorporating elements of satire, caricature, masquerade, and the grotesque, Ensor was a sharp observer of his social and political milieu and a skilled controversialist. Bridging the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and not easily fitting into one particular movement or group, his drawings are increasingly valued for their innovative subjects and techniques, as well as the strong social criticism at their heart. This volume, published to accompany the first major New York exhibition of Ensor's drawings, includes more than one hundred plates, most of them in color. Essays by Susan M. Canning (College of New Rochelle), Marcel De Maeyer (University of Ghent), and Robert Hoozee (Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent), along with a chronology by Xavier Tricot, serve to place Ensor's drawings in the context of both artistic and historical developments of his time and his oeuvre.

Description
Customer Reviews
James Ensor Terrific book of exceptional artist. Didn't get to see recent exhibit at Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC so this book of it has excellent reproductions of the works . A Surrealist before the Surrealists This book is the catalogue for the current show at Moma. Being a lover of Ensor's gift as a colorist, I was a little disappointed with the quality of the reproductions: many of them are thumbnail sizes and, as far as the color plates of the exhibited works are concerned, they are somewhat dull and faded. Besides, Ensor's masterpiece, "The Entry of Christ in Brussels" (owned by the Getty Museum, which did not release it for the exhibition) is reproduced here in a thumbnail size, which completely anihilates the effect the huge painting usually has on the viewer. Even if it was not part of the exhibition, it deserved a better reproduction in the catalogue. The value of this book mainly resides in the quality of the essays, which tackle such topics as Ensor as the painter of a fantasmagoric modern life, Ensor confronted to art history, Ensor and his own image, Ensor's vision of nature, etc.

While the public and press were at first hostile to his work, his paintings continued to be exhibited, and he gradually won worldwide acclaim. In 1929, Ensor was made a baron by King Albert. His home in Ostend became a museum after his death. His early style of painting is characterized by somber color, thick impasto, and an earthy realism with occasional hints of the fantastic. Toward 1883 his palette lightened, and by 1887 his paintings were flooded with intense light and strong color. From 1887 to 1900 he produced his most inventive and original work. Ensor's sources included the grotesque fantasies of Bosch, Bruegel, and Callot. Among his masterpieces is The Temptation of St. Anthony
