Description
A collection of classic comic strips from a master of American comics and art. Out of print for a decade, this new edition (with newly designed covers) of The Comic Strip Art of Lyonel Feininger features one of the ten cartooning greats featured in the historic "Masters of American Comics" show produced by the Los Angeles Hammer Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art and currently traveling across the country. It is the only complete collection of the legendary comic strips of one of the medium's all-time greatest artists. Known worldwide for his accomplishments as a painter, Feininger began his career as a cartoonist, producing—all too briefly—two beautifully ambitious comic strips for the Chicago Sunday Tribune in 1906: The Kin-Der-Kids and Wee Willie Winkie's World , both of which remain high points in the history of strip cartooning.

On the Pomeranian coast so beloved by many of the Expressionist artists, Deep became Feininger’s favored summer residence from 1924 until his return to America in 1936; he was, in fact, in Deep when he learned of the closing of the Bauhaus and of his status as a “degenerate” artist. In 1932, the artist, joined by his sons, spent the entire summer–from May 13 to September 30–in West Deep and Treptow. In the letters he wrote daily to his wife Julia while there, one gains an understanding of the artistic inspiration Feininger found near the sea:

The eldest son of painter Lyonel Feininger, he was born in Paris in 1906. Upon completion of training as a cabinet-maker at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the early 20s, he went on to study architecture in the state schools of Weimar and Zerbst. It was while working as an architectural photographer in Stockholm that he developed the sweeping vistas and fine balance for which his pictures were famous. Emigrating to New York following the outbreak of World War II, Feininger was hired as a photo-editor by Life magazine. In his own work, he captured images of urban... He is the first child of the violinist Karl Feininger from Durlach in Baden (South West Germany) and the American singer Elizabeth Cecilia Feininger, born Lutz, who is also of German descent. His childhood is spent in New York City. However, when his parents go on concert tours, Lyonel and his younger sisters Helen and Elsa often stay with friends of the family in Connecticut, or with their grandparents in South Carolina. At age nine, Lyonel receives violin lessons from his father but is more interested in drawing and building model ships. The child is fascinated by steamboats and locomotives.
