Biography
He was born Guido di Pietro , at Vicchio, in the Tuscan province of Mugello , near Florence towards the end of the 14th century , of unknown but seemingly well-to-do parentage, and was baptized Guido or Guidolino (friars used to change their name when entering the orders). Still a young boy he asked for admittance at the convent of San Domenico in Fiesole , where Dominican friars were known for their rigid rules (and were called "the Observers"). He completed his

(born c. 1387-1400, died 1455) See also: Renaissance Artists VIEW IMAGE LIST "Fra Angelico was a Dominican friar in the monastery at Fiesole. The convent of San Marco was taken over by his Order in 1436, and he was commissioned to decorate the friar's cells with frescoes painted directly on to wet plaster walls. These were intended to stimulate prayer and meditation rather than to be a factual record of the Biblical story. He wanted to represent the sacredness of Christ in all its glory and simplicity; although he understood the principles of perspective, as seen here in the rendition of the tomb door, these were often sacrificed for a simple style. In the nineteenth century Angelico's painting captured the imagination of the Pre-Raphaelites, who saw in them the charm of a pure faith. In this fresco , Christ appears to Mary Magdalene. She has been weeping after discovering that his tomb is empty. A figure appears. At first she mistakes him for a gardener as he is carrying a hoe. Suddenly realizing who it is, she goes to embrace him. But he moves away, telling her not to touch him - literally 'Noli Me Tangere'."

    Life:
A pious, holy man, Fra Angelico somehow managed to combine the life of a Dominican friar with that of an innovative, professional artist. Though his early training was in manuscript illumination, he is best known for his purely colored frescoes, done in everything from monks' cells to a Vatican chapel. The good Fra was influenced by Gentile da Fabriano (early on) and Masaccio (in spatial concepts). Fra Angelico was beatified in 1984, and named patron saint of artists by Pope John Paul II.

People who knew him when he was older called him Fra Giovanni da Fiesole (Brother John from Fiesole). When Giorgio Vasari wrote about him in Lives of the Artists , in the 1500s, he was already known as Fra Giovanni Angelico (Brother Giovanni who is like an Angel). The Italians usually call him il Beato Angelico (the Blessed Angelico). He has been called this for a long time, because he was thought to be blessed by God who gave him the talent of painting, and also because he was such a good and holy man. The name "Blessed Angelico" has now been made official, because in 1982 Pope John Paul II "conferred beatification" which means that he is now on the way to being made a saint Vasari says about him: " It is impossible to think of enough good things to say about this holy father, who was so humble and modest in everything that he did and said, and whose pictures were painted with such cleverness and holy faith.

Italian painter, florentine school Fra Angelico was the dominant figure among several who became prominent at that time, including Paolo Uccello, Fra Filippo Lippi and Andrea del Castagno. By the early 1430s Fra Angelico Fra Angelico softened the typically astringent and declamatory style of Tuscan mural decoration with the colouristic and luminescent nuances that characterize his panel paintings. His legacy passed directly to the second half of the 15th century through the work of his close follower Benozzo Gozzoli and indirectly through the production of Domenico Veneziano and Piero della Francesca. Fra Angelico was undoubtedly the leading master in Rome at mid-century, and had the survival rate of 15th-century Roman painting been greater, his significance for such later artists as Melozzo da Forli and Antoniazzo Romano might be clearer than it is.

    Fra Angelico
A famous painter of the Florentine school , born near Castello di Vicchio in the province of Mugello Tuscany , 1387; died at Rome , 1455. He was christened Guido , and his father's name being Pietro he was known as Guido , or Guidolino, di Pietro, but his full appellation today is that of "Blessed Fra Angelico Giovanni da Fiesole ". He and his supposed younger brother, Fra Benedetto da Fiesole , or da Mugello, joined the order of Preachers in 1407, entering the Dominican convent at Fiesole . Giovanni was twenty years old at the time the brothers began their art careers as illustrators of manuscripts , and Fra Benedetto, who had considerable talent as an illuminator and miniaturist, is supposed to have assisted his more celebrated brother in his famous frescoes in the convent of San Marco in Florence . Fra Benedetto was superior at San Dominico at Fiesole for some years before his death in 1448. Fra Angelico, who during a residence at Foligno had come under the influence of Giotto whose work at Assisi was within easy reach, soon graduated from the illumination of

Angelico, Fra (Guido di Pietro) (c. 1400-55). Florentine painter, a Dominican friar. Although in popular tradition he has been seen as `not an artist properly so-called but an inspired saint' (Ruskin), Angelico was in fact a highly professional artist, who was in touch with the most advanced developments in contemporary Florentine art and in later life travelled extensively for prestigious commissions. He probably began his career as a manuscript illuminator, and his early paintings are strongly influenced by International Gothic . But even in the most lavishly decorative of them all the Annunciation in the Diocesan Museum in Cortona Masaccio's incluence is evident in the insistent perspective of the architecture. For most of his career Angelico was based in S. Domenico in Fiesole (he became Prior there in 1450), but his most famous works were painted at S. Marco in Florence (now an Angelico museum), a Sylvestrine monastry which was taken over by his Order in 1436. He and his assistants painted about fifty frescos in the friary (c.1438-45) that are at once the expression of and a guide to the spiritual life of the community. Many of the frescos are in the friars' cells and were intended as aids to devotion; with their immaculate coloring, their economy in drawing and composition, and their freedom from the accidents of time and place, they attain a sense of blissful serenity. In the last decade of his life Angelico also worked in Orvieto and Perugia, and most importantly in Rome, where he frescoed the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Vatican with

    FRA GIOVANNI ANGELICO
    of Fiesole
of the Order of Friars Preachers
    Painter
FRA GIOVANNI ANGELICO of Fiesole, known in the world as Guido, was no less excellent as a painter and illuminator than as a monk of the highest character, and in both capacities he deserves to be most honourably remembered. Although he might easily have led a secular life and gained what he liked at art beyond what he possessed, for he showed great skill while still quite young, yet, being naturally quiet and modest, he entered the order of Friars Preachers chiefly for the sake of his soul and for his peace of mind. For although it is possible for men of all conditions to serve God, yet some think that they can win salvation more easily in a monastery than in the world. Although this course is well enough for good men, yet it leads to a wretched and unhappy existence for those who become monks for other ends. In S. Domenico at Fiesole he painted the picture of the high altar, but because it was thought to be damaged it has been retouched by other masters and spoiled. The predella and the ciborium of the Sacrament, however have been better preserved, and the innumerable figures contained in the heavenly glory are so fine that they appear really to be from Paradise, and one can never tire of looking at them. In a chapel of the same church there is an Annunciation by his hand, the face being so devout, delicate and well made that it is not like the work of a man, but a product of Paradise. In the landscape are Adam and Eve, who led to the Incarnation of the Redeemer through the Virgin. The predella also contains some very charming little scenes.
