Lamentation Over The Dead Christ
Fra Angelico was a Dominican friar and a painter, and is known by many other names. He was born Fra Giovanni de Fiesole in Vicchio di Mugello and was baptized as Guido di Piero. He has also been known as “Beato Angelico” since 1984; “Beato” is a reflection on his painting (beauty), and “Angelico” is how he was referenced after his death (angelic).
Fiesole Triptych
Nothing is known about Fra Angelico’s parents, but it is thought that he came from a wealthy family. He initially received training in illumination, and many manuscripts are still in existence today in San Marco that are thought to be completely by his hand. Very little is known about his actual training, but it is thought that he was influenced by Lorenzo Monaco and the Sienese School of art.

Fra. Angelico Born Giovanni da Fiesole c. , Fra. Angelico was a Dominican whose artistic works combine spirituality and naturalism, so standing as a bridge between Mediæval and Renaissance styles. Before entering the monastery at San Marco c. , Giovanni was probably a miniaturist who had studied with Ghiberti and painted in a Gothic style. His frescoes (done ) at his monastery, of which he was prior, are among his most famous works and show his ability to fit artistic expression into architectural constraints. In , Pope Eugene IV summoned Fra. Angelico to Rome, where he painted in old St. Peter's and in the private chapel of Nicholas V in the Vatican. The work in old St. Peter's has since been destroyed. His altarpieces at Fiesole and at Assisi are exemplars of his style, which shows skilled draftsmanship and excellent use of color. Angelico died in and was beatified in 1982. Karen Rae Keck

Fra Angelico Fra Angelico Prints Fra Angelico , (c. February 18 ) was an Early Italian Renaissance painter, referred to in Vasari 's Lives of the Artists as having "a rare and perfect talent". Known in Italy as il Beato Angelico, he was known to his contemporaries as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole (Brother John from Fiesole). In Giorgio Vasari ’s Lives of the Artists , written prior to 1555, he is already known as Fra Giovanni Angelico (Brother Giovanni the Angelic One). Within his lifetime, or shortly thereafter, he was also called Il Beato (the Blessed), in reference to his skills in painting religious subjects. In 1982, Pope John Paul II conferred beatification , thereby making this title official.

Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico , as he is known in English, is il Beato Angelico in Italian and was known to his contemporaries as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole . By the time Vasari published his "Lives of the Artists" in 1555, Fra Angelico was already known as Fra Giovanni Angelico (Brother John, the Angelic One). He was born Guido di Pietro, at Rupecanina, in Vicchio di Mugello , near Fiesole, some time around 1395 and died in Rome in 1455. The appellation "Beato" was a measure of the esteem in which his painting was held and not a reference to his beatification, which took place only in 1984.
Fra Angelico was a Dominican and a mendicant, so, not being part of a closed order, he was free to meet and talk to others in the Florence. He initially trained as an illuminator and in 1420-1422, he entered the convent of San Domenico in Fiesole with his brother Benedetto. It was here that he produced his first known paintings: the Altarpiece of the Annunciation, The Coronation of the Virgin, as well as the frescoes for his monastery. Fra Angelico not only gained recognition as a painter but was held in high regard in his convent because he was appointed Vicario for the first time in Fiesole from 1432-33, a post he was to hold frequently in later years.
