In June 1447 he proceeded to Orvieto, to paint in the Cappella Nuova of the cathedral, with the cooperation of his pupil Benozzo Gozzoli . He afterwards returned to Rome to paint the chapel of Nicholas V. In this capital he died in 1455, and he lies buried in the church of the Minerva. According to all the accounts which have reached us, few men on whom the distinction of beatification has been conferred could have deserved it more nobly than Fra Giovanni. He led a holy and self-denying life, shunning all advancement, and was a brother to the poor; no man ever saw him angered. He painted with unceasing diligence, treating none but sacred subjects; he never retouched or altered his work, probably with a religious feeling that such as divine providence allowed the thing to come, such it should remain He was wont to say that he who illustrates the acts of Christ should be with Christ. It is averred that he never handled a brush without fervent prayer and he wept when he painted a Crucifixion. The Last Judgment and the Annunciation were two of the subjects he most frequently treated.

Baptized Guido di Pietro, Fra (Brother) Angelico gained a reputation as an artist while still in his teens. He influenced and inspired other artists of his time with his serenely religious works, which were themselves influenced by classical art. Angelico may have been trained by Lorenzo Monaco, a superb miniaturist whose influence can be seen in Angelico's attention to fine detail, and among his earliest works were manuscript illuminations. Deeply devout, in his early twenties he became a Dominican monk and entered the Monastery of San Domenico at Fiesole. There he took the name Fra Giovanni da Fiesole, and over the next two decades he painted some of the most stunning works to come out of the early Renaissance. Angelico's work reflects contemporary artistic trends and illustrates that Brother Giovanni did not remained cloistered in the monastery. In 1439 Angelico moved to the monastery of San Marco in Florence, where he executed a number of murals. The altarpiece for the rebuilt church there, funded by the Medici family, may be Fra Angelico's most compelling work. In 1445 Angelico was called to Rome by Pope Eugene IV and stayed there about five years. Of the several works he produced there, only the decorative paintings for the Chapel of Nicholas V survive.

It is especially notable for its fresco paintings by Fra Angelico (1447–1451) and his assistants, who may have executed much of the actual work. The name is derived from its patron, Pope Nicholas V , who had it built for use as his private chapel. The chapel is located in the Tower of Innocent III , in the most ancient part of the Apostolic Palace. The walls were decorated by Fra Angelico with images of two of the earliest Christian martyrs; the upper level has Episodes from the Life of St. Stephen , and the lower one Scenes from the life of St. Laurence . The vault is painted blue, decorated with stars, and features figures of the Four Evangelists in the corners. The pilasters are decorated with the eight Doctors of the Church Fra Angelico depicted a Deposition of Christ (the removal of Christ from the Cross) on the wall behind the altar, but it has been destroyed. However, his other works in the

    Saint Fra Angelico
by Amy Steedman early a hundred years had passed by since Giotto lived and worked in Florence, and in the same hilly country where he used to tend his sheep another great painter was born.
Many other artists had come and gone, and had added their golden links of beauty to the chain of Art which bound these years together. Some day you will learn to know all their names and what they did. But now we will only single out, here and there, a few of those names which are perhaps greater than the rest. Just as on a clear night, when we look up into the starlit sky, it would bewilder us to try and remember all the stars, so we learn first to know those that are most easily recognised - the Plough, or the Great Bear, as they shine with a clear steady light against the background of a thousand lesser stars.
The name by which this second great painter is known is Fra Angelico, but that was only the name he earned in later years. His baby name was Guido, and his home was in a village close to where Giotto was born.
He was not a poor boy, and did not need to work in the fields or tend the sheep on the hillside. Indeed, he might have soon become rich and famous, for his wonderful talent for painting would have quickly brought him honours and wealth if he had gone out into the world. But instead of this, when he was a young man of twenty he made up his mind to enter the convent at Fiesole, and to become a monk of the Order of Saint Dominic.

    Beato Angelico,
    Guido di Piero da Mugello,
Fra Giovanni da Fiesole The life of Fra Giovanni da Fiesole, baptized as Guido di Piero (born around 1395 in Vicchio di Mugello, died in Rome in 1455) is the stuff of legend. "Angelic" was how he came to be known soon after his death; the name "Beato" was a comment on his painting and not a reference to his beatification, which happened only recently, in 1984. Fra Angelico was a Dominican, and a mendicant, so, not being part of a closed order, he was free to meet and talk to others in the city. In 1420-1422, he entered the convent of San Domenico in Fiesole with his brother Benedetto. It was here that he produced his first works: altarpiece for the high altar, Altarpiece of the Annunciation The Coronation of the Virgin , as well as the frescoes for his monastery. Fra Angelico not only gained recognition as a painter, but must have commanded respect in his convent because he was appointed Vicario for the first time in Fiesole from 1432/33, a post he was to hold frequently in later years. In the 1430’s the painter worked in Florentine churches. He carried out the following commissions for the Dominicans in Cortona: the Cortona Triptych and the Annunciation panel. From 1438, he worked on his most important commission, the

Fra Angelico - Painter of the Early Renaissance
One of the most important painters of the Early Renaissance, Fra Angelico was a contemporary of Masaccio.
    Enlarge Image Fra Angelico :
Fra Angelico, whose real name was Guido di Pietro, was born sometime between 1395 and 1400 in Vicchio, a small town near Florence.
For a long time, there was a bit of an uncertainty over his birth-date – the exact day is still not known, but he was thought to have been born earlier than the aforementioned dates - and the fine details of his life still remain shrouded. Fra Angelico lived in the early years of the Renaissance, when, unlike later during the High Renaissance, artists hadn't yet achieved the elevated status where every notable personal trait was recorded for posterity.
The first time that Fra Angelico was written about in any great detail was, after his death, in Giorgio Vasari's 'Lives of the Artists'. Here he is depicted as a rather unworldly, saintly personality, who cared for religion and religion alone. His work tells you differently – when I look at it, I see a brilliant colorist, a brilliant draftsman, a brilliant man with a broad, humanist vision.
    Church Career :
As a young man, Fra Angelico was a successful and rather well-known painter. According to Vasari, he was so in demand with art patrons that he could have made a mint and lived on happily in the secular world. However he was strongly inclined towards religion and entered the Dominican Order and devoted his talent, without any expectation of personal compensation, for the Church's benefit henceforth. He worked first at the San Domenico Monastery in Fiesole and later at the San Marco Monastery in Florence. He took on the name of Fra Giovanni da Fiesole. The title 'Fra Angelico' was bestowed upon him posthumously – for his angelic temperament and the angelic beauty with which he infused his paintings.
