Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico ("Brother Angel"), born Guido di Pietro near Castello di Vicchio in Tuscany, 1387 and died at Rome, 1455. He was a famous Italian painter of the early Renaissance Florentine School.
He was known to his peers as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole and earned his nickname through his unusually pious nature. He was called Angelico (Italian for "angelic") and Beato (Italian for "blessed") because the paintings he did were of calm, religious subjects and because of his extraordinary personal piety.
He is documented as a painter in Florence during the period 1417-1418 and took his vows as a Dominican monk in nearby Fiesole sometime between 1418 and about 1421.Considering the number of documented commissions he received, he must have had light religious responsibilities. One of his most extensive projects was the decoration of the Dominican Monastery of San Marco in Florence between 1435 and 1445. Fra Angelico went to work at the Vatican in Rome in 1445, and the frescoes at San Marco were completed by his assistants several years later.
Angelico combined the influence of the elegantly decorative Gothic style of Gentile da Fabriano with the more realistic style of such Renaissance masters as the painter Masaccio and the sculptors Donatello and Ghiberti, all of whom worked in Florence. Angelico was also aware of the theories of perspective. His skill in creating monumental figures, representing motion, and suggesting deep space through the use of linear perspective, especially in the Roman frescoes, mark him as one of the foremost painters of the Renaissance.

ANGELICO, Fra (b. ca. 1400, Vicchio nell Mugello, d. 1455, Roma)
Biography
Florentine painter, a Dominican friar, originally named Guido di Pietro. Although in popular tradition he has been seen as 'not an artist properly so-called but an inspired saint', (Ruskin), Angelico was in fact a highly professional artist, who was in touch with the most advanced developments in contemporary Florentine art and in later life travelled extensively for prestigious commissions. Angelico entered a Dominican convent in Fiesole in 1418 and became a friar using the name Giovanni da Fiesole. Although his teacher is unknown, he apparently began his career as an illuminator of missals and other religious books. He began to paint altarpieces and other panels; among his important early works are the Madonna of the Star (c. 1424, San Marco, Florence) and San Domenico Altarpiece with a predella representing Christ in Glory Surrounded by Saints and Angels (National Gallery, London), which depicts more than 250 distinct figures. Among other works of that period are two of the Coronation of the Virgin ( Uffizi,

Along with 63 other works, this masterpiece is part of the group of paintings on long-term loan from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. In addition to The Madonna of Humility , the exhibition also provides the opportunity to see twelve further panel paintings normally on display in the Museum's galleries or in Barcelona. Fra Angelico was born near Vicchio (Tuscany) around 1395-1400 and began his artistic career as a miniaturist. Before he entered the Dominican Order his name was Guido di Piero. His first endeavours as a painter would seem to date from around the second half of 1410, and by the middle of the following decade he had begun to acquire a reputation in artistic circles. Guido di Piero entered the Dominican Order, taking the name of Fra Giovanni, at some point between 1418 and 1421 and he is mentioned for the first time as a friar at San Domenico in Fiesole in 1423. Among his early works is the altarpiece of The Virgin and Child enthroned with Saints Thomas of Aquinus, Barnabus, Dominic and Peter Martyr

Fra Angelico (c.1400-55)
Fra Angelico (angelic brother) was the popular name given to the major painter of the Renaissance in Florence Fra Giovanni da Fiesole , a Dominican friar. Devoted exclusively to religious art , he employed his art for didactic purposes, and his signature style was simple and direct, though based on the largeness of form of Giotto (1267-1337) and Tommaso Masaccio A well known figure in Renaissance art , Fra Angelico is best-known for his series of more than 50 frescos concerning the Life and especially the Passion of Christ, which he painted at the convent of San Marco - mostly as an aid to contemplation in the friars' cells. He also frescoed the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Vatican. Despite his status as a member of the Church, Fra Angelico was in fact a highly professional painter who travelled extensively to execute a number of prestigious commissions, making a significant contribution to religious fine art painting ITALIAN RENAISSANCE ERA
