Gainsborough, Thomas
English painter of portraits, landscapes, and fancy pictures, one of the most individual geniuses in British art.
Thomas Gainsborough was born at Sudbury, Soffolk, and went to London in about 1740. He returned to Sudbury in 1748 and in 1752 he set up as a portrait painter in Ipswich. His patrons were the merchants of the town and the neighboring squires, but when in 1759 he moved to Bath, his new sitters were members of Society, and he developed a free and elegant mode of oil painting seen at its most characteristic in full-length portraits (Mary, Countess Howe, Kenwood House, London, c.1763-64).
In 1768 Thomas Gainsborough was elected a foundation member of the Royal Academy, and in 1774 he moved permanently to London. Here he further developed the personal style he had evolved at Bath, working with light and rapid brush-strokes and delicate and evanescent colors. Thomas Gainsborough became a favorite painter of the Royal Family, even though his rival Joshua Reynolds was appointed King's Principal Painter.

Gainsborough, Thomas
Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-88). English painter of portraits, landscapes, and fancy pictures, one of the most individual geniuses in British art. He was born at Sudbury, Soffolk, and went to London in about 1740, probably studying with the French engraver Gravelot. He returned to Sudbury in 1748 and in 1752 he set up as a portrait painter at Ipswitch. His work at this time consisted mainly of heads and half-length, but he also painted some small portrait groups in landscape settings which are the most lyrical of all English conversation pieces ( Heneage Lloyd and his Sister , Fitzwilliam, Cambridge). His patrons were the merchants of the town and the neighboring squires, but when in 1759 he moved to Bath, his new sitters were members of Society, and he developed a free and elegant mode of painting seen at its most characteristic in full-length portraits ( Mary, Countess Howe , Kenwood House, London, c.1763-64). In 1768 he was elected a foundation member of the Royal Academy, and in 1774 he moved permanently to London. Here he further developed the personal style he had evolved at Bath, working with light and rapid brush-strokes and delicate and evanescent colors. He became a favorite painter of the Royal Family, even though his rival Reynolds was appointed King's Principal Painter. Gainsborough sometimes said that while portraiture was his profession landscape painting was his pleasure, and he continued to paint landscapes long after he had left a country neighborhood. He produced many landscape drawings, some in pencil, some in charcoal and chalk, and he occasionally made drawings which he varnished. He also, in later years, painted fancy pictures of pastoral subjects (

Gainsborough, Thomas (
Gainsborough, Thomas , one of England 's greatest artists in portrait and landscape painting, born at Sudbury Suffolk ; he early displayed a talent for drawing, and at 14 was sent to London to study art; when 19 he started as a portrait-painter at Ipswich , having by this time married Margaret Burr, a young lady with £200 a year; patronised by Sir Philip Thicknesse, he removed in 1760 to Bath , where he rose into high favour, and in 1774 he sought a wider field in London ; he shared the honours of painting portraits with Reynolds and of landscape with Wilson; his portraits have more of grace if less of genius, than Reynolds, while his landscapes inaugurated a freer and more genial manner of dealing with nature, while as a colourist Ruskin declares him the greatest since Rubens; among his most famous pictures are portraits of Mrs. Siddons, the Duchess of Devonshire Definition taken from The Nuttall Encyclopædia , edited by the Reverend James Wood (1907) Gaillard Gaius Web fromoldbooks.org

The Blue Boy Thomas Gainsborough (christened May 14, 1727 – August 2, 1788) was one of the foremost portrait and landscape painters of eighteenth century Great Britain He is recognized among the most innovative and enigmatic artists of his era. Some of his early work was influenced by Sir Anthony van Dyck and Peter Paul Rubens , but his landscapes, portraits, and so-called fancy pictures also show the work of an independent and original genius Gainsborough is universally considered the most creative and adventurous artist in England between William Hogarth and J.M.W. Turner and poses a link between them. He also influenced the work of noted painter John Constable . His artistic life presents a continuous struggle to get away from the portraiture which earned him a living ("the drudgery of face-painting," as he called it) and to immerse himself in the genre of landscapes which was emerging then as a public favorite.

Thomas Gainsborough PAINTINGS and Biography
Thomas Gainsborough
Gainsborough was one of the most famous portrait and landscape painters of 18th century Britain.
Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. His father was a schoolteacher involved with the wool trade. At the age of fourteen Gainsborough impressed his father with his pencilling skills so that he let him go to London to study art in 1740. In London he first trained under engraver Hubert Gravelot but eventually became associated with William Hogarth and his school. One of his mentors was Francis Hayman. In those years he contributed to the decoration of what is now the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children and the supper boxes at Vauxhall Gardens.
landscape paintings

In 1774, Gainsborough and his family moved to London to live in Schomberg House, Pall Mall. In 1777 Gainsborough again began to exhibit his paintings in the Royal Academy, with portraits of contemporary celebrities, including the Duke and Duchess of Cumberland, related to the royal family. These exhibitions continued for the next six years.
In his later years, Gainsborough often painted landscapes of common settings. With Richard Wilson, he was one of the originators of the eighteenth-century British landscape school, and with Joshua Reynolds, he was the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century.

He used to spend a lot of time outdoors, drawing. In 1740, at the age of 13 he was sent to London to study art. He spent several years working in the studios of different artists, one of whom was Hubert Gravelot, a draughtsman and engraver, another one was a scene-painter and illustrator Francis Hayman.
In 1748 Gainsborough presented The Charterhouse (1748) to the Foundling Hospital, it was a way for the artist to show one of his works, because at that time there were no other possibilities for young artists. In 1746 Gainsborough married Margaret Burr Continued...
