Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough was born and educated in Sudbury before he moved to London to develop his skills as an artist. He was quickly adopted by a circle of painters and draughtsmen who admired the work of William Hogarth and he contributed to a number of important artistic ventures including the decoration of the Court Room at the Foundling Hospital (now the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children) and the supper boxes at Vauxhall Gardens. There is some evidence that he was regarded as a specialist landscape painter at this early period and he contributed to the background of at least one portrait by another artist. He married in 1746 and returned to Sudbury early in 1749. In his native town he painted his first masterpiece, Mr and Mrs Robert Andrews (London, National Gallery), a conversation piece much in the style of the work of one of his teachers in London, Francis Hayman. After the birth of his two daughters he moved to Ipswich which gave him more opportunity to obtain portrait commissions. He developed a naturalistic approach to portraiture by abandoning 'conversation pieces' and painting a number of straight forward head-and-shoulder portraits. By 1758 he felt that he should see whether his work was acceptable to a more discerning public and he visited Bath. After about six months it was clear that there was a ready market for his portraits and he moved to the city with his family late the following year.

BLUEBOY
by Thomas Gainsborough
Enlarged view
The painting of The Blue Boy is perhaps one of the most well known works by Gainsborough (GAINZ burro). It is thought it is a picture of Jonathan Buttall, who was the son of a wealthy hardware merchant. It is painted with oil paints on a canvas and is quite large; 48 inches wide and 70 inches tall. He painted it over another painting he had already started to paint.
Thomas Gainsborough was born in England and began drawing when he was very young. He started taking lessons at the age of 13. It is said he once sketched a thief stealing from the Parson's garden so accurately, they recognized him as a man from the next village. The culprit was apprehended.
Gainsborough is noted for his portraits, but before he started doing portraits he was a painter of landscapes. He still included landscapes even in his portrait painting. In the painting on the left of Mr.and Mrs. Andrews the landscape is as equally important as the subjects. Evidently they are the landowners, but not the ones who work the land.

Jump to: navigation search Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-1788): English Painter. Along with Reynolds, Sir Joshua , Thomas Gainsborough dominated English painting during the latter half of the eighteenth century. Although he himself favored landscape painting and was most influential in the nineteenth century for his work in that genre, Gainsborough made his living as a portraitist, and he is probably best known today for his masterful portraits. Indeed, Gainsborough was the only English painter of the period to make significant contributions in both fields. Born in Sudbury, Suffolk to a family in the cloth trade, Gainsborough was sent to apprentice with an engraver in London after his father went bankrupt. In London, he studied at the St. Martin’s Lane Academy, a center of artistic innovation started by Hogarth, William . In 1744, he opened his own studio, and in 1746, he married Margaret Burr, the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Beaufort, who had provided her a living. Among his most famous paintings from this period were Conard Wood and The Charterhouse , which was commissioned for the recently opened foundling hospital.

Description
Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was one of the masters of 18th-century art. This stunning book, published to accompany a major international exhibition, covering the artist's entire career, reveals the sheer range, quality, and originality of Gainsborough's work, from his engagingly naturalistic landscapes and touching images of children to his sophisticated and glamorous society portraits. In their revealing essay, Michael Rosenthal and Martin Myrone explore Gainsborough's dynamic involvement with the social world of his day, while other essays explore his subtle approach to the lucrative world of fashionable portraiture and the often pointed social commentary behind his seductive landscapes. This volume provides new and refreshing insights into Gainsborough as an artist who succeeded in creating an experimental and modern art for his own time, and whose works remain vital and rewarding today.

Biography:

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Suffolk, with recognizable talent even as a child. At 13, his family sent him to study in London under French artist Hubert Gravelot. In 1745, Gainsborough attempted to make a living selling his landscapes, but his business ventures soon failed and he returned to his birthplace. He then moved to Bath, abandoning his preferred landscape subjects for the more lucrative career of a portrait artist. In 1768, Gainsborough’s reputation earned him a spot as one of the founders of the Royal Academy in London.
