Gauguin, Paul
Paul Gauguin Biography
One of the leading French painters of the Post-Impressionist period, whose development of a conceptual method of representation was a decisive step for 20th-century art. After spending a short period with Van Gogh in Arles, Paul Gauguin increasingly abandoned imitative art for expressiveness through colour. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in the South Pacific. During his first stay there Gauguin discovered primitive art, with its flat forms and the violent colors belonging to an untamed nature. And then, with absolute sincerity, he transferred them into oil paintings.

Gauguin, Paul Biography
Gauguin was born in Paris into a liberal middle-class family. After an adventurous early life, including a four-year stay in Peru with his family and a stint in the French merchant marine, he became a successful Parisian stockbroker, settling into a comfortable bourgeois existence with his wife and five children. In 1874, after meeting the artist Camille Pissarro and viewing the first impressionist exhibition, he became a collector and amateur painter. He exhibited with the impressionists in 1876, 1880, 1881, 1882, and 1886. In 1883 he gave up his secure existence to devote himself to painting; his wife and children, without adequate subsistence, were forced to return to her family. From 1886 to 1891 Gauguin lived mainly in rural Brittany where he was the center of a small group of experimental painters known as the school of Pont-Aven.
In 1891, ruined and in debt, Gauguin sailed for the South Seas to escape European civilization and "everything that is artificial and conventional." Except for one visit to France from 1893 to 1895, he remained in the Tropics for the rest of his life, first in Tahiti and later in the Marquesas Islands. The essential characteristics of his style changed little in the South Seas; he retained the qualities of expressive color, denial of perspective, and thick, flat forms. A modest stipend from a Parisian art dealer sustained him until his death at Atuona in the Marquesas on May 9, 1903.
Gauguin's bold experiments in coloring led directly to the 20th-century fauvist style in modern art. His strong modeling influenced the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and the later expressionist school.

born june 7th 1848, Paris. died Marquesas, May 9, 1903 Paul Gauguin was a French post impressionist painter whose lush color, flat two-dimensional forms, and subject matter helped form the basis of modern art. Gauguin was born in Paris on June 7, 1848, into a liberal middle-class family.
He exhibited in five of the eight impressionist exhibitions. In 1883 he gave up his secure existence to devote himself to painting; his wife and children, without adequate subsistence, were forced to return to her family. From 1886 to 1891 Gauguin lived mainly in rural Brittany (except for a trip to Panama and Martinique from 1887 to 1888), where he was the center of a small group of experimental painters known as the school of Pont-Aven. Under the influence of the painter Émile Bernard, Gauguin turned away from impressionism and adapted a less naturalistic style, which he called synthetism.

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris France to journalist Clovis Gauguin and Aline Maria Chazal, daughter of the half- Peruvian proto- socialist leader Flora Tristan , a feminist precursor. Where Are We Going? Although his main achievements were to lie elsewhere, Gauguin was, to use a fanciful metaphor, nursed in the bosom of Impressionism . His attitudes to art were deeply influenced by his experience of its first exhibition, and he himself participated in those of 1880, 1881 and 1882. The son of a French journalist and a Peruvian Creole, whose mother had been a writer and a follower of Saint-Simon, he was brought up in Lima, joined the merchant navy in 1865, and in 1872 began a successful career as a stockbroker in Paris. In 1874 he saw the first Impressionist exhibition, which completely entranced him and confirmed his desire to become a painter. He spent some 17,000 francs on works by

Biography
French artist, painter, sculptor and ceramist. Considered one of the best Post-Impressionist painters to come out of France, Gauguin was best known for his brilliantly colored works depicting primitive life in Polynesia. The son of a journalist and a French-Peruvian mother, Gauguin spent his early years in Lima, Peru, where his parents fled to escape the rigors of the coup d'etat in France that had been imposed by Napoleon III. His father died in Lima; three years later Gauguin returned to France with his mother. At age 17 he traveled the world as a merchant seaman and returned to Paris at age 23 to parlay his business skills into earning a living as a stockbroker. This venture proved successful and two years later he married Danish governess Mette Gad. Settling into a comfortable bourgeois life, the couple had five children in rapid succession. Gauguin befriended Camille Pisarro, who introduced him to impressionistic art. Intrigued, Gauguin took up painting in his spare time and weekends, developing his talent to the point that he exhibited intermittently with the impressionists over the next six years.

The painting probably originates from the collection of the art dealer Ambroise Vollard and was at last probably in possession of Erich Slomovic. The front and back are painted. The back could be assigned to the time in Brittany. The front probably originates from the time on Tahiti and is marked with “P. Gauguin” and dated with “92”. On the back still the remainders of a stamp can be recognized. It probably concerns a tariff stamp of receipt Marseille at that time.
The painting is at present in private property and is to be assigned to Paul Gauguin. Startpage Photos Description History ... Contact
