Nationality: Armenian American
Uploaded artworks: About the artist: Arshile Gorky was born Vosdanik Adoian in the village of Khorkom, province of Van, Armenia, on April 15, 1904. The Adoians became refugees from the Turkish invasion; Gorky himself left Van in 1915 and arrived in the United States about March 1, 1920. He stayed with relatives in Watertown, Massachusetts, and with his father, who had settled in Providence, Rhode Island. By 1922 he lived in Watertown and taught at the New School of Design in Boston. In 1925 he moved to New York and changed his name to Arshile Gorky. He entered the Grand Central School of Art in New York as a student but soon became an instructor of drawing; from 1926 to 1931 he was a member of the faculty. Throughout the 1920s Gorky's painting was influenced by Georges Braque, Paul Cézanne, and, above all, Pablo Picasso.

Gorky, Arshile
Gorky, Arshile
Armenian-born American painter, whose work combined geometric abstraction and quasi-figurative surrealism, and who acted as a major link between European surrealism and United States abstract expressionism. Arshile Gorky was born Vosdanig Manoog Adoian at Khorkom, Van, Turkish Armenia (now in Turkey).
In 1920 he emigrated to the United States and studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design and in Boston, Massachusetts. He settled in New York City in 1925. His earliest work showed the influence of Paul Cezanne, European cubism, and especially Pablo Picasso.
After 1939, his art works were influenced by the European surrealists and by the abstractions of Wassily Kandinsky and Joan Miro. By bringing these styles to America, Gorky exerted great influence on later American painting. In particular, Gorky had an effect on the developing abstract expressionist style of his contemporaries Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning (he shared a studio with the latter in the late 1930s). Gorky's later artworks, such as The Liver is the Cock's Comb (1944, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York) and Agony (1947, Museum of Modern Art, New York City), like surrealist paintings, are expressive of his subconscious fantasies. These works are characterized by calligraphic line, related hues juxtaposed with one another, and biomorphic forms influenced by surrealism. Between 1946 and 1948, just as Arshile Gorky emerged as one of the most important artists in the United States, he experienced a series of personal tragedies that ended in his suicide.

Gorky made two versions of The Artist and His Mother, the other is in the National Gallery of Art Washington, DC. Abstract Expressionism
However great a disaster World War II was, it did at least mean that artists such as Piet Mondrian and Max Ernst, in leaving Europe for the safety of the USA, greatly extended their artistic influence. It is impossible to estimate how much they affected American art, but the fact remains that in the 1940s and '50s, for the first time, American artists became internationally important with their new vision and new artistic vocabulary, known as Abstract Expressionism. The first public exhibitions of work by the ``New York School'' of artists who were to become known as Abstract Expressionists were held in the mid '40s. Like many other modern movements, Abstract Expressionism does not describe any one particular style, but rather a general attitude; not all the work was abstract, nor was it all expressive. What these artists did have in common were morally loaded themes, often heavyweight and tragic, on a grand scale. In contrast to the themes of social realism and regional life that characterized American art of previous decades, these artists valued, above all, individuality and spontaneous improvisation. They felt ill at ease with conventional subjects and styles, neither of which could adequately convey their new vision. In fact, style as such almost ceased to exist with the Abstract Expressionists, and they drew their inspiration from all directions. The painters who came to be called ``Abstract Expressionists'' shared a similarity of outlook rather than of style an outlook characterized by a spirit of revolt and a belief in freedom of expression. The main exponents of the genre were
