Hassam, Childe
Childe Hassam (1859-1935) studied at the Boston Art School and was apprenticed to an engraver, beginning his career as an illustrator. In 1883 he went to Paris, studying with Boulanger and coming into contact with the Impressionist movement. Returning to America, to New York, he set up in 1898 a group known as The Ten which attempted to revolt against the prevailing academic style. His favourite subjects were street scenes and rural landscapes. Hassam received many prizes and awards, being elected to the National Academy in 1906. A decade later he returned to the techniques of his youth and began work as a graphic artist; by the time of his death he had completed more than 350 lithographs and etchings in which he sought to achieve in black and white the light effects of his oil paintings.

Childe Hassam: American Impressionist
When a president wraps himself in the flag, he becomes smaller, as if he and America alike had retreated into a cocoon. When Childe Hassam unwrapped the flag, he had found his most memorable image. Few artists since before the Renaissance have taken an icon as their subject, and fewer still have made it an icon themselves. For Hassam, it singled out a moment of celebration. He had passed fifty by the time he painted rallies, mostly along Fifth Avenue, during World War I. He, America, and its proudest city had arrived, and what more was there to say? From his retrospective at the Met this summer, quite a bit. It shows an artist who found his subject early and kept at it. It shows an American Impressionist out to rival the French, but with little interest in what made them precursors of modern art. Conversely, it shows an artist whose decorative, nostalgic view of cities made him by necessity a painter of modern life. More than almost anyone, he looks back to his roots in the New England elite and ahead to the urban scene. His dual focus makes his a story in miniature of American Impressionism and Realism.
Capture the flag
All well and good, but it leaves out pretty much all of Hassam's career and the specificity of American painting. Before I get too keen on social history, I better remember that Hassam's understanding of it arose less from political maturity or opportunism than from the subject of his art. I had best take a closer look at what makes the New York scenes so emblematic of an Impressionist. Contrast them with another American icon, one painted after a second world war.

Childe Hassam
Marblehead's Etcher
by Alec MacDonald
Famed artist, Childe Hassam, drew a Marblehead Messenger sketch more than a century ago. For nearly a century, the first "serious" work of art by one of American's foremost artists gracefully adorned the front page of the Marblehead Messenger and is still reproduced weekly in an inside page of the Marblehead Reporter.
The artist is Frederick Childe Hassam and the sketch he sold to the Messenger is that panoramic view of the town of Marblehead which became so familiar to generations of townspeople over the years.
The work is described as "serious" because until that time all that young Childe Hassam had sold were letterhead sketches for Lynn shoe factories. The budding artist was then at a wood engraver's shop in his native Boston.
Today, Childe Hassam's works are displayed in major galleries of American and Europe and bring prices of more than a quarter million dollars. Two of his works, "Boston Common at Twilight" painted in 1886, and "Grand Prix Day" (in Paris), painted in 1887, are on permanent display at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
By the end of the 19th century, he was ranked by some citrates as one of the "Big Three,"
