23. Art/Museums: Childe Hassam: American Impressionist At The Metropolitan Museum Of
Review of the artist and his work by Carter B. Horsley based on the June 10 to September 12, 2004 New York exhibition. From The City Review.

Childe Hassam American Impressionist Metropolitan Museum of Art
June 10-September 12, 2004
By Carter B. Horsley Hassam did not like to be said to be influenced by Monet, but there can be little question that the bulk of his oeuvre centers about the Impressionist style. One should also caution that French Impressionists did not have as great an impact on American painters as James Abbott McNeil Whistler and John Singer Sargent, two great expatriate American artists whose bravura and painterliness in their best works are incomparable. Where does Hassam stand artistically, then, among his American colleagues? Whistler and Sargent, of course, hold their own with the French Impressionists as great masters of international renown. Chase produced some very fine and flamboyant masterworks. One thinks of his beach scene with brightly colored umbrellas, his foggy pier scenes, and his large interior scenes rather than his less exciting Shinnecock landscapes. Less influential and less consistent, Twachtman, nevertheless, produced the most memorable and original images of all the American Impressionists. Dewing and Inness were highly consistent and produced many works of great beauty, certainly more than Chase, or Twachtman, or Hassam, yet their work is often not classified as Impressionist.

Back to Artists Back to Impressionism About Childe Hassam Frederick Childe Hassam, perhaps the most famous American impressionist after *Mary Cassatt, was the son of Frederick Fitch Hassam and Rosa Hathorn Hassam, who was related to Nathaniel Hawthorne. Frederick, a cutler and collector of American antiques, lost his business in a fire in November 1872 and Childe Hassam was forced to leave high school early to seek employment. After a few weeks in an accounting position, he worked for a wood engraver named George E. Johnston. Hassam appeared as "draughtsman" in the Boston city directory (1879-1881), and in 1882 he was listed as "artist." His earliest endeavors were illustrations for children’s books, and for periodicals: Harper’s, The Century and Scribner’s. Hassam made an important statement at this time on American art:
The American Section in the Universal has convinced me for ever of the capability of Americans to claim a school. Inness, Whistler, Sargent and plenty of men just as well able to cope in their own chosen line with anything done over here. But as long as a crowd of apostates from America who have more money than brains continue to go to France to study for such a long time, sometimes so long that they finish by staying there altogether, there will be little growth of an American school.

Sacramento, California Childe Hassam in the Crocker Art Museum Collection By Crocker Curator and Acting Director Janice T. Driesbach December, 1998 Childe Hassam, An Outdoor Portrait of Miss Weir , 1909, oil on canvas, 38 x 38 inches, Crocker Art Museum Collection, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Vern C. Jones and other generous donors. S elections from the collection now on view include a painting and a watercolor by Childe Hassam (1859-1935), America's best-known Impressionist painter. It is fitting that the artist be represented by these examples, as he worked in both media throughout his career. An Outdoor Portrait of Miss Weir , painted in 1909, documents Hassam's mature Impressionist style, and acknowledges his repeated visits to the Isles of Shoals, where America's first offshore resort was established off the coast of New Hampshire. Perhaps best known as a painter of urban scenes, Hassam recorded many of his outdoor subjects on extended stays in Europe or on visits to artists' colonies throughout New England. Soon after returning from his first trip to Europe in 1883, Hassam traveled to Appledore, one of the Isles of Shoals, where Celia Thaxter (1835 -1894) presided over a coterie of artists, writers, and musicians who gathered there each summer. Thaxter was a poet and the magnificent garden she maintained was the subject of her most enduring work

Linda Batis, associate curator of fine arts, said "The drawings on view in the exhibition reveal Hassam's natural affinity for the graphic arts as a way to explore color and pictorial structure. They provide insight into a fundamental fact about Hassam's work. He drew and painted what he saw before him." Hassam enjoyed a long relationship with Carnegie Museum of Art and John Beatty, the museum's first director. Between 1896 and 1935, Hassam exhibited more than 90 paintings at several

Childe Hassam (1858-1935) is widely recognized as the preeminent American Impressionist painter. His arrival at Florence Griswold's Old Lyme boarding house during the summer of 1903 introduced the bright palette and broken brushwork of Impressionism to the Lyme Art Colony. That summer was the start of a long and fruitful relationship that Hassam had with other artists there and with the landscape of Lyme. This new exhibition features over twenty Hassam paintings from museums and private collections and is designed to give a picture of the artist's pivotal contribution to the Lyme Art Colony as a leading center of Impressionism. Support for this exhibition has been received from Xerox and from the Indian Point Foundation. (right: Childe Hassam

Editor's note: The Portland Art Museum provided source material to Resource Library for the following article or essay. If you have questions or comments regarding the source material, please contact the Portland Art Museum directly through either this phone number or web address: Childe Hassam: Impressionist in the West December 11, 2004 - March 6, 2005 I n 1904 and 1908, leading American Impressionist Childe Hassam visited Oregon and the surrounding region, to try his hand at capturing the visual essence of the exhilarating terrain of the West. Traveling throughout the state and into Washington and Idaho, Hassam painted over 60 landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and still lifes. Organized by the Portland Art Museum, the exhibition Childe Hassam: Impressionist in the West brings together for the first time as a group paintings from these two trips, as well as paintings from Hassam's larger body of work. Also on view are works by Portland Art Museum founder, C.E.S. Wood, the lawyer, writer, art collector, and fellow painter who convinced Hassam to come west and explore the beauty of the region, often painting side-by-side with him. The American Impressionist Childe Hassam is undoubtedly one of the best loved of American artists. Hassam was a highly prolific artist with an extensive oeuvre encompassing prints, drawings, and both watercolor and oil paintings. Despite the number of exhibitions and publications devoted to him, there are still rich veins of material to uncover and explore within this large body of work. One such untapped group of images is the assemblage of paintings he produced during his trips west in the early 1900s; most notably those he created during his extended sojourns in Oregon in 1904 and 1908.

Saint Joseph College Gallery West Hartford, CT http://www.sjc.edu/ The following essay is the Introduction, by Vincenza Uccello, M.F.A., Director of Collections, Saint Joseph College Gallery, from the catalogue for the exhibition titled "Childe Hassam: Prints of New England and Long Island," held at the Gallery in March, 1990. This essay is reprinted with permission of the author and Saint Joseph College. In 1874 a group of French artists boycotting the official Paris Salon presented their own exhibition of paintings. It was a momentous event in the history of art - the official recognition of a new plein-air style in painting. What these artists had in common was a deep involvement with rendering the ever-changing qualities of light and atmosphere in different hours of the day, different seasons and different weather conditions. Each painter experimented and devised methods and techniques of broken color and varying brush strokes to render the constant phenomenon of change relative to, and as an expression of, his own visual perception and artistic personality. The immediate reaction by the French public and critics alike was that of shock and derision. The movement was dubbed Impressionism after a painting by Monet entitled Impression, Sunrise
