Overview and images from the Benton Museum and the New Britain Museum of American Art exhibition, which ran from January 23 - March 16, 2001.
http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/2aa/2aa460.htm
William Benton Museum of Art University of Connecticut Storrs, CT http://www.Benton.UConn.edu P brings together from the collections of the Benton Museum and the New Britain Museum of American Art thirty-three of the artists' paintings, drawings and prints of modern life from the 1880s to the 1920s. The exhibition runs from January 23 - March 16, 2001, with a reception open to the public on Friday, February 2, from 6-8 p.m. (left: Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), New England Shore Old Mumford House, Easthampton, 1919 , oil on canvas, 21 3/8 x 30 inches, Charles and Elizabeth Buchanan Collection, NBMAA, 1989.25) Childe Hassam (1859-1935) and Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924) lived lives that were parallel in many ways yet dramatically different in others. They were contemporaries who grew up and studied art in Boston. As exhibiting artists, they likely would have crossed paths. Both were profoundly influenced by French art but at different times and with strikingly different results. Hassam's art would become institutionalized as American impressionism while Prendergast's found few adherents. The focal points of the exhibition are Hassam's Le Jour de Grande Prix (1887) and Prendergast's Lighthouse at St. Malo

Childe Hassam (1859-1935)
Childe Hassam, a pioneer of the American Impressionist style, had a long and very prolific career. By the time of his death in 1935, many critics and artists considered him one of the most significant and influential American painters. His friend and colleague, Boston artist Edmund Charles Tarbell (1862-1938), claimed that Hassam was “one of the great painters of America.”(1) Born Frederick Childe Hassam (he later stopped using his first name) on October 17, 1859, he grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, then a suburb of Boston. He had a notable artistic and literary lineage and counted both William Morris Hunt (1824-1879) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) among his relatives. At an early age, he developed an interest in drawing and took his first drawing classes in grade school. Hassam quickly became active in the flourishing art world in New York. In 1890, he helped found the New York Water Color Club, joined the American Water Color Society, and was elected to two social and exhibiting organizations for progressive artists, the Players Club and the Society of American Artists. In 1897, he participated in the establishment of the Ten American Painters, an exhibiting society that included William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), Edmund Charles Tarbell, John Twachtman (1853-1902), and Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919). As H. Barbara Weinberg, the Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, explains, “his involvement in these and other groups was crucial, as they abetted his lifelong campaign to show and sell his works through regular exhibitions” in New York and throughout the United States.(2)

better than advertised! The book I ordered "used" was still in the original shrink wrap, and a luxuriously printed book which I not only study from, but leave out as a coffee table book. I don't know how they can afford to charge so little, but I am delighted at my purchase. Sandy K. on Hassam I discovered Hassam at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth last year. I was especially attracted to his flag paintings since I am a retired U. S. History teacher. I can highly recommend this book. It is both thorough and quite visually attractive and, of course, Amazon has the very best price!! Childe Hassam American Impressionist This book is an excellent read and provides ample pictures for immense enjoyment. Through Amazon I was able to purchase the book for nearly half the price compared to anywhere else. Thanks Amazon!

Childe Hassam was the premier Impressionist painter of New York City. From 1890 through World War I he painted its fashionable boulevards, genteel park lanes, festive military parades, new neighborhoods, and occasionally, as in Manhattan's Misty Sunset the new skyline that was prompting many to call New York the eighth wonder of the world. Like many American Impressionists, Hassam was a New Englander. A charter member of The Ten, he began drawing in the 1870s, studying in Boston under William Rimmer and the Munich academician, Ignaz Gaugengigl. Influenced by the tonalist painter, George Fuller, Hassam became well-known for his street scenes such as Rainy Day, Columbus Avenue, Boston (1885, The Toledo Museum of Art). He went to Paris in 1886, making numerous rural and urban plein-air paintings that put him in the center of the emerging American Impressionist brotherhood. He returned to Boston in 1889, eventually settling in New York City.
In this painting, Hassam shifts away from the sunny, smiling atmosphere of his pre-1900 city scenes
