Back to Artists Back to Tonalism About George Inness When James Thomas Flexner, American art historian emeritus, called George Inness the leader of "Native American Impressionism" (Mayor and Davis, 1977, p. xxiii), and declared that Inness and *Homer exhibited "Impressionistic practices" (Flexner, 1962, p. 243), he used the term loosely. Others, like Jackman (1928, p. 73) remark inaccurately that in Inness’s late works "his technique became delightfully impressionistic." This may be true, only in the way that some landscapes in Pompeiian wall painting are "impressionistic." Wilmerding (1976, p. 153) noted in passing that superficially, Inness’s work "approached French Impressionism, which he disdained. His landscapes were, by contrast, neither scientific, optical, nor transient, but rather shrouded in mist and mystery of an immaterial world." Highly critical of *Monet and French impressionism, Inness is usually associated with *tonalism, a movement that was regarded as the

(b . May 1, 1825, Newburgh, N.Y., U.S.d. Aug. 3, 1894, Bridge of Allen, Stirling, Scot.), U.S. painter especially known for the luminous, atmospheric quality of his late landscapes. Inness was largely self-taught. Such early works as "The Lackawanna Valley" (1855; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) show the influence of Asher B. Durand and Thomas Cole, painters of the Hudson River school. But the sweeping, loosely painted panoramas of the Dutch landscapists Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema turned him away from the Hudson River school's preoccupation with carefully rendered detail; and a third trip to Europe (1854) ended his initial period of experiment in subject and struggle against technical tightness. This stay abroad confirmed the already discernible influence of the French Barbizon The early works of his late period (1875-94), such as "Autumn Oaks" ( c. 1875; Metropolitan Museum of Art), were marked by great concentration of feeling presaging the later ascendancy of colour over form. As his nature mysticism intensified, his pictures dissolved into shimmering colour, magnificent in itself and no longer supported by formal construction. His painter son, George Inness, Jr. (1854-1926), remained faithful to the practices of Barbizon and resisted Impressionism in obedience to his father's strongly expressed convictions.

"Inness exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design in 1844 and continued to exhibit there almost every year until the end of his life. Though he was elected an Associate of the Academy in 1853, he was not made an Academician until 1868. He was one of the important early members of the Society of American Artists, an exhibition organization founded in 1877 to challenge the conservative policies of the Academy. "Inness and his family left New York in 1860, moving first to Medfield, Massachusetts, and later to an estate near Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In the early 1860s, fellow artist William Page introduced Inness to the theories of Emanuel Swedenborg, which made a deep and lasting impression on him; indeed, became a major force in his intellectual life. Throughout that decade, spent in rural surroundings, he sought to make his paintings convey the profound spiritual meaning he felt the landscape around him possessed. "In 1870, the Innesses moved to Italy for four years, during which time the artist sent back paintings to be sold by the Boston dealers Williams and Everett, receiving in exchange regular monthly payments. Stopping again in Paris on the way back to the United States, in 1874, Inness first saw works by the

Inness, George
George Inness (May 1, 1825 -August 3, 1894), was an American landscape painter; born in Newburgh, New York; died at Bridge of Allan in Scotland.
His work was influenced, in turn, by that of the old masters, the Hudson River school, the Barbizon school, and, finally, by the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose spiritualism found vivid expression in the work of Inness' maturity. He is best known for these mature works that helped define the Tonalist movement. Inness was the fifth of thirteen children born to John Williams Inness, a farmer, and his wife, Clarissa Baldwin. His family moved to Newark, New Jersey when he was about five years of age. In 1839 he studied for several months with an itinerant painter, John Jesse Barker. In his teens, Inness worked as a map engraver in New York City. Inness died while in Scotland in 1894. According to his son, he was viewing the sunset, when he threw up his hands into the air and exclaimed, "My God! oh, how beautiful!", fell to the ground, and died minutes later. -
