From 1920 to 1924 the so-called 'architectural' period maintained the dynamism of the 'dramatic' periods, but more precise forms began to emerge: dots, bundles of straight or broken lines, segments of circles, rectangles and lenticular forms. Circular, concentric or overlapping outlines characterize the so-called 'circular' period ( 19251928), the other elements being more particularly used in the following period, called 'romantic or concrete'. The plastic signs to which the painter clung were employed for their own sake, quite apart from any reference to the material world. When Uccello put a diagonal in his picture, it had to be a lance. Kandinsky confined himself to the line itself, to its orientation and its relationship to the other elements of the composition. After successful avant-garde exhibitions, he founded the influential Munich group Der Blaue Reiter ( The Blue Rider ; 1911-14) and began completely abstract painting. His forms evolved from fluid and organic to geometric and, finally, to pictographic ( e.g., Tempered lan Encyclopaedia Britannica Kandinsky, himself an accomplished musician, once said Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul. The concept that color and musical harmony are linked has a long history, intriguing scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton. Kandinsky used color in a highly theoretical way associating tone with timbre (the sound's character), hue with pitch, and saturation with the volume of sound. He even claimed that when he saw color he heard music. Autumn in Bavaria

The Biography
Beginning. Moscow. 1866-1896
Wassily Wasilyevich Kandinsky was born on December, 16th (4), 1866 in Moscow, in a well-to-do family of a businessman in a good cultural environment. In 1871 the family moved to Odessa where his father ran his tea factory. There, alongside with attending a classical gymnasium (grammar school), the boy learned to play the piano and the cello and took to drawing with a coach. "I remember that drawing and a little bit later painting lifted me out of the reality" , he wrote later. In Kandinsky's works of his childhood period we can find rather specific color combinations, which he explained by the fact that "each color lives by its mysterious life". However, Wassily's parents saw him in the future as a lawyer. In the year of 1886 he went to Moscow and entered Law Faculty of Moscow University. Graduating with honors, six years later Wassily married his cousin, Anna Chimyakina. In 1893 he became Docent (Associate Professor) of Law Faculty and continued teaching. In 1896 the famous in Derpt University in Tartu, where at that time the process of russification was taking place, a thirty-year-old Kandinsky was appointed Professor to the Department of Law, but at this particular time he decided to give up a successful career to devote himself completely to painting. Later on Kandinsky recollected two events, which had affected this decision: his visiting an exhibition of the French impressionists in Moscow in 1895 and an emotional shock he experienced from K. Monet's, "Haystacks", and an impression of Rihard Wagner's "Lohengrin" at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow into a merchant family. In 1871 the family moved to Odessa, where his parents soon divorced. The boy was looked after by his aunt. In Odessa Kandinsky studied in a classical gymnasium and had private lessons in music, drawing and painting. In 1886 he returned to Moscow to begin studying law and economics at the Moscow University. While a student, in 1889, he got commissioned by the "Society for Natural Science, Ethnography and Anthropology" to go on a research expedition to Vologda. The strong folk art of northern Russia made a lasting impression on him, and the results of his trip made an impression on the Society, which chose him their member.
In 1892 Kandinsky got his Law degree. He became a lecturer at the Moscow University, and married his cousin Anna (Anya) Chimiakina. He pursued his academic career but at the same time paid more and more attention to art. Thus in 1895 he took the post of art director of a publishing house in Moscow. Continued...

Vasilii Kandinskii (1866-1944) Vasilii Kandinskii was a painter, a printmaker, a stage designer, a decorative artist, and a theorist. In 1886, he began to study law and economics at the University of Moscow. Three years later, he took part in an ethnographical expedition to the Vologda province and wrote an article about folk art; this experience was to influence his early art, which would be highly decorative and would feature bright colors contrasting with the dark background. This effective technique can be seen in such paintings as Song of the Volga Couple Riding (1906), and Colorful Life (1907), devoted to the life of Old Russia. After traveling to St. Petersburg and Paris, in 1893 he was appointed to the Department of Law at the University of Moscow. In 1896, at the age of thirty, he gave up his successful career as a lawyer and economist to become a painter. He moved to Munich and one year later entered Anton Azbe's painting school. In 1900, he became a student at the Munich Academy and studied under Franz von Stuck. At that time, he was in contact with St. Petersburg World of Art group. Between 1900 and 1908, Kandinskii exhibited regularly with the Moscow Association of Artists and was very active in the Munich art world. In 1901, he founded the

Early years
Kandinsky's mother was a Muscovite, one of his great-grandmothers a Mongolian princess, and his father a native of Kyakhta, a Siberian town near the Chinese border; the boy thus grew up with a cultural heritage that was partly European and partly Asian. His family was genteel, well-to-do, and fond of travel; while still a child he became familiar with Venice, Rome, Florence, the Caucasus, and the Crimean Peninsula. At Odessa, where his parents settled in 1871, he completed his secondary schooling and became an amateur performer on the piano and the cello. He also became an amateur painter, and he later recalled, as a sort of first impulse toward abstraction, an adolescent conviction that each colour had a mysterious life of its own. In 1886 he began to study law and economics at the University of Moscow, but he continued to have unusual feelings about colour as he contemplated the city's vivid architecture and its collections of icons; in the latter, he once said, could be found the roots of his own art. In 1889 the university sent him on an ethnographic mission to the province of Vologda, in the forested north, and he returned with a lasting interest in the often garish, nonrealistic styles of Russian folk painting. During that same year he discovered the Rembrandts in the Hermitage at St. Petersburg, and he furthered his visual education with a trip to Paris. He pursued his academic career and in 1893 was granted the degree equivalent of a doctorate.

Biography
Russian artist, an expressionist painter, who in the years immediately preceding World War I, completed an amazing transformation of art in a crucial period of 20th century culture, and made abstraction itself the subject of the painting. A Russian-born mystic, trained as a lawyer, he helped lay the foundations for abstract art in Munich before World War I and was the most influential painter in early Modernism. Born into a comfortable situation as the son of a successful tea merchant, Kandinsky was a Russian aristocrat with perhaps Mongol ancestors. He was a serious student of economics and ethnography, and a graduate from law school at the University of Moscow. He reached a turning point, however, at age 30, and decided to return to and embrace his first love, art. He left for Munich in 1896, a neophyte painter. He opened his own art school in 1904 and traveled in 1906. He wrote on the spiritual in art in 1910. By the time he left Munich for Moscow in 1914, Kandinsky was one of the great masters of his time. He taught there at the Moscow Academy of Fine Arts. But Russia had changed, and Kandinsky left again seven years later.

Kandinsky, Wassily
Small Pleasures
1913 (170 Kb); Oil on canvas, 110 x 120.6 cm (43 1/4 x 47 1/4 in) Small Pleasures was preceded by a number of studies and related works, the earliest of which, With Sun (oil and tempera? on glass) appears to date from about 1910. The composition of Small Pleasures is centered round two hills, each crowned by a citadel. On the right-hand side is a boat with three oars which is riding a storm under a forbidding black cloud. To the bottom left it is possible to make out a couple at a steep angle to the hill, and above them three horsemen arrested in full gallop. A fiery sun flashes out wheels of color. The actual interpretation of these elements has been the subject of much controversy; especially since the recent discovery of an unpublished essay on the painting written by Kandinsky in June 1913. This document appears to discourage the irony which some have read into an imagined discrepancy between the title and the actual work, and reduces the heavy apocalyptic signification of the imagery. Indeed Kandinsky writes of the 'joyfulness' of execution. It is legitimate then, to see the work as a celebration of Kandinsky's style during this period, as affirming the spiritual and practical pleasures he manifestly derived from painting; he speaks of 'pouring a lot of small pleasures on to the canvas'. While giving the impression of heavenly chaos
