Klee, Paul
Klee, Paul Biography
Swiss painter who was one of the most original masters of modern art. Belonging to no specific art movement, Paul Klee created art works known for their fantastic dream images, wit, and imagination.
A German citizen, Paul Klee lived much of his life in Switzerland. He was born in Munchenbuchsee, near Bern, Switzerland, on December 18, 1879, and in 1898 moved to Munich, where he studied art at a private school and at the Munich Academy. His earliest artworks were pencil landscape studies that showed the influence of impressionism. Paul Klee was a teacher at the Bauhaus, Germany's most advanced art school, from 1920 to 1931.
Klee was also a master draftsman, and many of his artworks are elaborated line drawings with subject matter that grew out of fantasy or dream imagery; he described his technique in these drawings as "taking a line for a walk
After 1935, afflicted by a progressive skin and muscular disease, Klee adopted a broad, flat style characterized by thick, crayonlike lines and large areas of subdued color.
Paul Klee died in Muralto, Switzerland, on June 29, 1940. His artwork influenced all later 20th-century surrealist and nonobjective artists and was a prime source for the budding abstract expressionist movement.

Klee, Paul
Klee, Paul
Swiss-born painter and graphic artist whose personal, often gently humorous paintings are replete with allusions to dreams, music, and poetry, Primitive art, surealism and cubism, and children's art all seem blended into his small-scale, delicate oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings. Paul Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation Klee chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. There his teacher was the popular symbolist and society painter Franz von Stuck.
After his marriage in 1906 to the pianist Lili Stumpf, Paul Klee settled in Munich, then an important center for avant-garde art. That same year he exhibited his etchings for the first time. His friendship with the painters Kandinsky and August Macke prompted him to join Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an expressionist group that contributed much to the development of abstract art.
Klee taught at the Bauhaus school after World War I, where his friend Kandinsky was also a faculty member. In 1931 he began teaching at Dusseldorf Academy, but he was dismissed by the Nazis, who termed his work "degenerate." In 1933, Paul Klee went to Switzerland. There he came down with the crippling collagen disease scleroderma, which forced him to develop a simpler style and eventually killed him.

9. Klee, Paul
Even more than the variations of Picasso, whose genius recapitulates the history of forms, Klee's art opens on the future. His work is not easy to understand.

KLEE Paul Klee was in everything he did, not just superficially but by a projection of his physical being in a profound way. He actually becomes the imœba trembling in the depths of the water, the crumbling mountain peak, the plant growing towards its fulfilment. He was completely at one with Nature. He had the power of giving substance to shadow and of giving form to everything that was fleeting or evanescent, be it a flower, foam or smoke. He was perhaps the only artist of our time who, without resorting to Impressionism, could paint the ceaseless movement of the heavens as seen by a child lying in the grass and dazzled by the beauty of a Free summer's day. His work is strictly individual, but never set apart by egocentricity nor arrogantly superhuman. Klee's painting plumbs the most secret depths of the human soul and opens on mysterious paths. And yet it never loses its purpose, and its language always remains that of visual possibilities.

Klee, Paul
Timeline: The 20th century A Swiss-born painter and graphic artist whose personal, often gently humorous works are replete with allusions to dreams, music, and poetry, Paul Klee , b. Dec. 18, 1879, d. June 29, 1940, is difficult to classify. Primitive art, surrealism cubism , and children's art all seem blended into his small-scale, delicate paintings, watercolors, and drawings. Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. There his teacher was the popular symbolist and society painter Franz von STUCK. Klee later toured Italy (1901-02), responding enthusiastically to Early Christian and Byzantine art. Klee's early works are mostly etchings and pen-and-ink drawings. These combine satirical, grotesque, and surreal elements and reveal the influence of Francisco de Goya and James Ensor, both of whom Klee admired. Two of his best-known etchings, dating from 1903, are Virgin in a Tree and Two Men Meet, Each Believing the Other to Be of Higher Rank
