Life and work
Klee was born in Münchenbuchsee (near Bern), Switzerland , into a musical family; his father, Hans Klee, was a German music teacher at the Hofwil Teacher Seminar near Bern. Klee started young at both art and music. At age seven, he started playing the violin, and at age eight, he was given a box of chalk from his grandmother and was encouraged to draw frequently with it. Paul could have done either as an adult; in his early years, he had wanted to be a musician, but he later decided on the visual arts. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in

Klee, Paul
The Golden Fish
1925 (140 Kb); Oil and watercolor on paper, mounted on cardboard, 50 x 69 cm (19 1/8 x 27 in); Kunsthalle, Hamburg Paul Klee was an introverted Swiss painter who spent most of his adult life in Germany until he was expelled by the Nazis in 1933. His work is impossible to clarify, except to say that it is hardly ever wholly abstract, but equally, never truly realistic. He had a natural sensitivity to music, the least material of the arts, and it runs through all his work, clarifying his spellbinding color and dematerializing his images. Paul Klee was one of the greatest colorists in the story of painting, and a skilled deployer of line. His gravest pictures may have an undercurrent of humor, and his powers of formal invention seem infinite. After making an early choice whether to pursue painting or music as a career, he became one of the most poetic and inventive of modern artists. He taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau and then at the Düsseldorf Academy. Until his expulsion from Düsseldorf by the Nazis, Klee painted and drew on a very small scale, yet the small size of his pictures does not affect their internal greatness. The Golden Fish glides through the kingdom of its underwater freedom, all lesser fish leaving a clear space for its gleaming body. This is a magical fish with runic signs upon his body, scarlet fins, and a great pink flower of an eye. He hangs majestically in the deep, dark blue magic of the sea, which is luminous with secret images of fertility. The great fish draws the mysteriousness of his secret world into significance. We may not understand the significance, but it is there. The sea and its creatures are arranged in glorious homage, belittled but also magnified by this bright presence. This quiet nobility, the brightness, the solitude, the general respect: all are true of Klee himself. Whether the art world knew it or not, he was their ``golden fish''.

Description
Now available in a flexi format, this dazzling monograph features some of Klee's favorite works, created during his most productive artistic period. As an avant-garde artist of the twentieth century, painter Paul Klee's work defies classification. What is indisputable, however, is its originality and brilliance. Taken from the artist's most prolific years,1917-1933, this book presents works that Klee never intended to sell. More than 100 color plates reveal Klee's chromatic genius and wide stylistic range. Along with an in-depth biography, the book features three essays, which examine Klee's versatility, place him in context with his contemporaries, and discuss his process for cataloging his works. The result is a unique and far-reaching exploration of one of the twentieth century's most important and admired artists, at the most fecund stage of his career.

Klee, Paul
Last years
Klee's continued residence in Germany was doomed when Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor in January 1933. Attacked by the Nazis, Klee was treated as a barbarian and a corrupted foreigner. He left Germany, traveling to Italy, Switzerland, and France. Profoundly disgusted by the Hitler regime, Klee again took up residence in politically neutral Switzerland, settling in Bern in 1933. In 1934 Klee had his first London exhibition; while in Bern and Basel, an important retrospective of his work was held in 1935. During the summer an attack of bronchitis followed by measles brought about pulmonary and cardiac complications. Ultimately, Klee's condition was diagnosed as scleroderma, a rare disease that results in a drying up of the mucous membranes and ends by striking the heart. Klee was initially unconcerned. He continued his work, took cures at Tarasp, and went to recuperate at Montana-sur-Sierre in the Swiss canton of Valais. Gradually, however, his hope of recovering diminished. In 1937 he became feverishly active and did not interrupt his work except for short walks. His palette took on brilliant strength, as seen in the pastel "Figur im Garten" ("Figure in the Garden"). In the same year, an exhibition of confiscated art, called Degenerate Art, opened in Munich. It included, among the many masterpieces of modern art condemned by the Nazis, 17 works by Paul Klee. On the occasion of Klee's 60th birthday, in 1939, he received telegrams and presents from everywhere, except official Germany.

Perhaps this all sounds rather strange to a soldier in the field, that one could be spending his time now watercoloring and “violining”-and I find both so important! Absolutely the essence of ‘I’! And Romanticism!” When Marc scolded him for being too romantic and otherworldly, Klee responded: “A falsely applied theory is just mind-clutter. As for my ‘I-and-Romanticism’ statement, I don’t want to appear stupid and say things that could sound phoney. Naturally I mean the
