This was engendered by the arrival of a new owner/director Joseph De Leeuw who, in 1902, gained the agency rights to sell goods from the celebrated London department store, . These were characterized by an Arts and Crafts philosophy and included textiles and the applied arts, a range increased after the First World War by French, Austrian, and Dutch goods. In 1918 Metz went into furniture production, commissioning Paul Bromberg to design furniture and offer advice on interior design, a post taken over by furniture designer W. Penaat in 1924. Metz was also active in textile design, commissioning a number of foreign designers, including Sonia Delaunay . By the early 1930s Metz products took on a markedly Modernist flavour, enthusiastically supported by De Leeuw who had become a member of the Nederlandische Bond voor Kunst in Industrie (BKI). He commissioned avant-garde furniture from the De Stijl architect-designer Gerrit Rietveld and carpets by his fellow De Stijl member, the painter Bart Van Der Leck, both of whom he had met. In 1933 Rietveld was commissioned to design a Modernist cupola on the roof of the predominantly 19th-century store, making an ideal showroom for Modernist designs that were seen to advantage in the strong light that permeated the heavily glazed structure. He also designed a new store-front in 1938. In fact, Rietveld's

WITH A SIGNIFICANT group of some 20 paintings and drawings by Vincent van Gogh as its core, the exhibition "Van Gogh to Mondrian: Modern Art from the Kroller-Muller Museum" tells the fascinating story of perhaps the 20th century's greatest patron of modern art, architecture, and design. One of the most important promoters of modernism in Holland, Helene Kroller-Muller created a remarkable ensemble of paintings by the most significant figures of the early modern period, including Fernand Leger, Pier Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Georges Seurat, and van Gogh. Working with leading Dutch modernist artists and architects in the 1910s and 1920s, Kroller-Muller and her husband, Anion anion , atom or group of atoms carrying a negative charge. The charge results because there are more electrons than protons in the anion. , envisioned a museum where the public could enjoy and study the development of modern painting from Pointillism pointillism : see postimpressionism.

Patience and Care Engender Paintings in Perpetual Motion
“Slow and seasoned”: That’s how a press release describes the paintings of Joanne Freeman on exhibition at Lohin Geduld Gallery. It’s prudent to be wary of the promotional verbiage verbiage - When the context involves a software or hardware system, this refers to documentation. This term borrows the connotations of mainstream "verbiage" to suggest that the documentation is of marginal utility and that the motives behind its production have little to do with accompanying visual art. More often than not, words overstate the merits of the work or, as is typical in our post-Conceptualist age, attempt to establish a much-needed justification. Yet “slow and seasoned” is just about right for Ms. Freeman’s paintings. The phrase expresses, if not the core of the art, then much that is distinctive about it.
Ms. Freeman’s pliant geometric abstractions are the antithesis of art that aspires to sound-bite status. They encourage the long look—and reward it, too. Ms. Freeman’s process and materials foster the kind of deliberation necessary to focus and animate pictorial form: She arrives at each picture through the successive layering of stenciled patterning. Oil paint, a slow-drying medium, doesn’t readily lend itself to this manner of working; it must require considerable patience. Otherwise, the crisp, taped edges and dense surfaces that Ms. Freeman favors would turn into
