Charles Rennie Mackintosh, considr comme l'homologue europen de Frank Lloyd Wright, sera un pionnier du mouvement moderne et un styliste prminent de l'Art nouveau. Il bnficie aujourd'hui d'une reconnaissance qu'il n'a pas connue de son vivant, surtout dans sa propre ville de Glasgow.
Biographie Architecte et dcorateur, Mackintosh s'opposera aux styles historicistes et deviendra l'un des prcurseurs de l'architecture rationnelle du XXme sicle en recherchant la synthse entre l'difice, son agencement intrieur et son mobilier.
Mackintosh s'imposera dans trois types d'architecture diffrents, les difices publics, les maisons individuelles et les salons de th. Il crera galement des pices de mobilier au design unique, dont quelques-unes sont exposes dans des muses et btiments publics (The Lighthouse, Mackintosh House, The Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow School of Art).
Mackintosh rejettera la tradition acadmique ds sa premire oeuvre, la tour d'angle de l'immeuble du Glasgow Herald (1894). Il participera l'exposition inaugurale de la Maison de l'Art nouveau, Paris, en 1895, et affirmera son style lors de la construction des nouveaux btiments de la Glasgow School of Arts et de la bibliothque adjacente (1898-1907). Ces btiments comptent parmi ses ralisations les plus importantes.

In 1889 he joined the firm of Honeyman and Keppie, becoming a partner in 1904. Glasgow School of Art Art Nouveau watercolour painting Although Mackintosh was nearly forgotten for several decades, the late 20th century saw a revival of interest in his work. The stark simplicity of his furniture designs, in particular, appealed to contemporary taste, and reproductions of Mackintosh chairs and settees began to be manufactured. The Mackintosh House in Glasgow was reconstructed and opened to the public as a museum in the late 1970s.
