Manet belonged to the upper middle class, and his existence was bound to that class; he remained attached to the privileges it enjoys, wished to receive the honours and recognition it confers, and at the same time gave rise during his lifetime to the most violent scandals and unwittingly produced through his painting a complete revolution. He brought a taste for liberty that did correspond to the aspirations of the time but was not yet admitted in its consequences. Academic art was still dominated by what was thought to be a tradition but in fact consisted of no more than the impoverished remnants of superannuated formulae. At the beginning Manet probably had no intention of playing the part of a revolutionary leader. He had very prudently begun by setting out upon a more conventional career.

French painter and printmaker who in his own work accomplished the transition from the realism of Gustave Courbet to Impressionism . Manet broke new ground in choosing subjects from the events and appearances of his own time and in stressing the definition of painting as the arrangement of paint areas on a canvas over and above its function as representation. Exhibited in 1863 at the Salon des Refusés, his Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe ("Luncheon on the Grass") aroused the hostility of the critics and the enthusiasm of a group of young painters who later formed the nucleus of the Impressionists. The last 20 years of Manet's life saw him form bonds with other great artists of the time and draw from his inspirations to develop his own techniques and style that would come to be heralded as innovative and serve as a major influence for future painters.

Edouard Manet was born into the ranks of the Parisian bourgeoisie on January 29, 1832. His Mother, Eugenie-Desiree Fournier, was a woman of refinement and god daughter of Charles Bernadotte, the Crown Prince of Sweden. Edouard's father, Auguste Manet, was a magistrate and judge who hoped that Edouard would someday follow in his footsteps, but Edouard was destined to follow another path.
Although well educated, Manet did not particularly excel within the academic environment but he showed a propensity toward drawing and the arts. His Uncle Charles Fournier encouraged Manet's appreciation for the arts and often took him and his childhood friend, Antonin Proust, on outings to the Louvre. In 1850 after serving in the merchant marines, Manet entered the studio of Thomas Couture where he studied until 1856. He was influenced by the old masters, particulary Velazquez and Goya , but Manet reasoned that ones art should reflect ideas and ideals of the present rather then the past. So disagreeing with Diderot's theory that great art only reflected the costume of the past, Manet sought instead to follow the advice of Baudelaire...to depict a contemporary realism, to be "

After traveling in Germany, Austria and Italy to study the Old Masters, Manet finally found the answer to all his questionings and aspirations for light and truth in the paintings of Velasquez and Goya at the Louvre. Influenced by these masters and by the example of Courbet, a French realist painter, he gradually evolved a new technique which presented modern aspects by modern methods. Continued...

Edouard Manet
Paris 1832 -
Paris 1883
In 1850 Edouard Manet, whose father was a prosperous Paris senior civil servant, left the naval academy to become an artist. Instead of applying to the conservative École des Beaux-Arts, he entered the studio of the history and portrait painter Thomas Couture between 1850 and 1856. Although Manet was unable to identify with the tenets of history painting and moralising eroticism he encountered there, he was nonetheless inspired to make his first important experiments with painting built up on colour.
An inveterate traveller, he copied the works of such consummate colourists as Hals, Rembrandt and Titian, his most important models, apart from Delacroix, Goya, Murillo and Velázquez. In the 1860s Manet began to handle what were really traditional themes in an avant-garde manner in the form of large-scale figurative paintings. "Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe", in which, as in "Olympia", a mythological theme is subjected to radically contemporary interpretation, caused a scandal at the 1863 Salon des Refusés.
Edouard Manet is provocative not only in his choice of subject matter and the way he relates it to the society of his time but also in his handling, which gives priority to colour over line, playing with brilliant contrasts and frequently making his compositions appear spontaneous.
