Manet: le opere
Vase de pivoines sur piedouche
(1864 cm 93,2X70,2 PARIGI, MUSEE D'ORSAY)

Manet, Edouard
On January 29, 1832, Edouard Manet was born into a high-class family in Paris, France. His mother, Eugenie-Desiree Fournier, was the goddaughter of Charles Bernadotte, the Crown Prince of Sweden. Eduardo's father, Augusta Manet was a magistrate and an officer in the Ministry of Justice. To uphold the wealthy life style, Auguste Manet wanted Edouard to continue the tradition, and become a figure of the law as well. To avoid becoming a judge, Manet joined the navy and became a sailor. After traveling around he decided that being a sailor was not his passion so he apprenticed himself to the French Painter Thomas Couture. Throughout this time, he traveled to the countries of Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands to study paintings of masters. The artists that influenced him the most include Diego Velazquez, Francisco de Goya, and Frans Hals.
Even though Manet was very well educated he did not excel in his academic career. Manet’s uncle, Charles Fournier, gave him his first drawing lesson as a child. After that Manet was drawn to the arts. His uncle would also take Edouard and his friend, Antonin Proust on frequent outings to the Louvre.
After studying with Tomas Couture, Manet enrolled and studied art at Ecole des Be

Should be in any art lover's collection!! This is a GREAT BOOK!!!! You do not have to know anything about art history to be able to appreciate and admire Manet's paintings. Lallemand is a wonderful author. He portrays his subject in an honest way without condemning or praising him, letting the reader decide. The thing I like about the books that Lallemand writes3 that I know ofis that they are these oversized coffee table books (144 pages), filled with info on the artist, and best of all, IN COLOR PAINTINGS ON EVERY PAGE. This is not like other art books, where the majority of paintings are in black and white, rather the reader gets to savor every picture because they are in color. Plus, there are details and close ups of some of the more famous paintings. And there are over 100 paintings. (Not tiny pictures either, whole pages, two pages even, are used to show the paintings.) [...] I hope everyone who enjoys art owns this book. It is a joy to look through and see the artistry and mastery of Manet.

Manet, Edouard
Le Djeuner sur l'herbe
Luncheon on the Grass ; Musee d'Orsay; Oil on canvas, 81 x 101 cm The active spirit of independance in Impressionism - if not its style - may be considered to date from this famous work, refused by the Salon in 1863 and exhibited, under the title of Le Bain at the Salon des Refuss of the same year. It is the larger of Manet's two versions of the subject, a smaller and freer version being in the Courtauld Institute Gallery in London. According to Antonin Proust, the idea of the picture suggested itself to Manet when they were watching bathers at Argenteuil. Manet was reminded of Giorgione's Concert Champtre and determined to repeat the theme in clearer colour and with modern personnel. A closer likeness of composition has been found in an engraving by Marcantonio of a group of river gods, after a now lost original by Raphael of The Judgement of Paris . An Old Master element of formal arrangement remains to distinguish it from an essentially Impressionist work and yet as well as being ostensibly set in the open there are various hints and suggestions in light and colour of fresh possibilities in open-air painting. The furious outcry it caused as the principal exhibit among the Salon rejects was based on the alleged indecency of two fully-dressed men appearing in the company of the naked female bather (an accusation no one had thought to make against the comparable juxtaposition in the work attributed to Giorgione). But the respectable persons represented in sedate conversation were Manet's favourite model, Victorine Meurend (whom he also painted as a toreador), his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Leenhoff, and Manet's younger brother, Eugne.

(b. Jan. 23, 1832, Paris, Franced. April 30, 1883, Paris)
French painter and printmaker who in his own work accomplished the transition from the realism of Gustave Courbet to Impressionism . Manet broke new ground in choosing subjects from the events and appearances of his own time and in stressing the definition of painting as the arrangement of paint areas on a canvas over and above its function as representation. Exhibited in 1863 at the Salon des Refuss, his Le Djeuner sur l'herbe ("Luncheon on the Grass") aroused the hostility of the critics and the enthusiasm of a group of young painters who later formed the nucleus of the Impressionists. His other notable works include Olympia (1863) and A Bar at the Folies-Bergre
