Matisse, Henri Biography
French artist, leader of the fauve groupregarded as one of the great formative figures in 20th-century art, a master of the use of color and form to convey emotional expression.
Henri Matisse was born in Le Cateau in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle-class family, he studied and began to practice law. In 1892, having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art formally. His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative; Matisse's own early style was a conventional form of naturalism.
Matisse's true artistic liberation, in terms of the use of color to render forms and organize spatial planes, came about first through the influence of the French painters Paul Gauguin and Paul C?zanne and the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, whose work he studied closely beginning about 1899. By 1905 he had produced some of the boldest color images ever created. In the same year Matisse exhibited this and similar oil paintings along with art works by his artist companions, including Andre Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. Together, the group was dubbed les fauves (literally, "the wild beasts") because of the extremes of emotionalism in which they seemed to have indulged, their use of vivid colors, and their distortion of shapes.
While he was regarded as a leader of radicalism in the arts, Matisse was beginning to gain the approval of a number of influential critics and collectors, including the American expatriate writer Gertrude Stein. His images of dancers and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily.

Henri Matisse Matisse, Henri (-mile-Benot) (b. Dec. 31, 1869, Le Cateau, Picardy, Fr.d. Nov. 3, 1954, Nice)
artist often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment. (Biographie en franais)
Matisse, Master of Color
The art of our century has been dominated by two men: Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They are artists of classical greatness, and their visionary forays into new art have changed our understanding of the world. Matisse was the elder of the two, but he was a slower and more methodical man by temperament and it was Picasso who initially made the greater splash. Matisse, like Raphael , was a born leader and taught and encouraged other painters, while Picasso, like Michelangelo , inhibited them with his power: he was a natural czar.

Matisse, Henri key Picasso , Matisse is considered one of the two foremost artists of the modern period. His contribution to 20th-century art is inestimably great. Matisse began to study law and, during an illness in 1890, took up painting, thereafter forsaking law entirely. He studied first with the academician Bouguereau and then with Gustave Moreau , in whose studio he met many painters who would soon attain prominence with him in the fauvist movement. Matisse's earliest work was exceptionally mature. He explored impressionism (e.g., La Desserte, 1897; Niarchos Coll., Athens) and, coming into contact with the theories of Paul Signac , drew upon neoimpressionist styles as in (c.1905; private coll.). To learn aspects of composition he made variations on the works of the old masters in the Louvre, a practice he continued for many years (e.g., Variation on a Still Life by de Heem

Hilary Spurling: The Unknown Matisse
Hilary Spurling is no art historian, but a broadly acclaimed biographer (e.g.: Paul Scott ). After eight years of research on the subject, she has published a brilliantly written book about the Henri Matisse (1869-1954). She explores the life and work of young Matisse up to his recognition in the years 1907-1908 (a second volume on the following years is still to be published). Spurling successfully goes beyond the - sometimes false - anecdotes that were known about Henri. With the help of Matisse' family, Spurling presents a lot of details about his childhood and in particular about the national financial scandal that ruined his wife's family, who had been a vital support for the artist.
Matisse was born in 1869 in the French part of Flanders, near the Belgian border. According to Spurling, he was a typical child of the Picardie: brusque, sober, unromantic, but full of energy and wit. In the drawing lessons at school, he had to copy mecanically geometric objects. Deviation from the established method or using colour was immediately punished. Matisse rebelled against it and this might be the reason why he became a great colorist. Another inspiration for the color in his paintings were the weavers of his hometown Bohain.

Matisse, one of the great reformers of European painting in the first half of the 20th century, studied law and graduated at the age of 21. He then began painting Impressionist and Pointillist paintings at the Acadmie Julian and then at the cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His works are characterised by increasingly simplified forms and brilliant colours which he developed after studying neo-Impressionist ideas about colour. The passionate colours of his works led to them being criticised as "Fauves"(wild ones) at the Paris autumn Salon in 1905.
His career reached a peak when he was commissioned to paint the interior and to design the stained-glass windows of the monastery chapel Notre-Dame du Rosaire in Vence near Nice which was dedicated in 1951.

Henri Matisse Biography
Artist
Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso , one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic (it means "wild beasts"), the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat , purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein . Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. Along with Picasso, Matisse was considered one of the world's greatest living painters throughout his life. His other works include "The Dance" (1910), "Red Fish" (1911) and "The Moroccan in Green" (1913). Other painters include Claude Monet Raphael and Frida Kahlo
