  • Born: 31 December 1869 Birthplace: Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France Died: 3 November 1954 Best Known As: French artist and leader of the Fauve movement
Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso , one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic (it means "wild beasts"), the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat , purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein . Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. Along with Picasso, Matisse was considered one of the world's greatest living painters throughout his life. His other works include "The Dance" (1910), "Red Fish" (1911) and "The Moroccan in Green" (1913).

Henri Matisse - 1869-1954
Henri Matisse was born as the son of a grain merchant in the Picardy region of northern France. He studied law and worked as a law clerk. When Henri Matisse was 21 years old he became seriously ill. During the phase of convalescence Matisse started painting and discovered his love for art, which should become his life-long passion. Two years later, in 1892, he gave up his career as a lawyer. He attended art classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and dabbled in different styles. He then was influenced by the impressionist and post-impressionist painters Pisarro, Cezanne, van Gogh, Gauguin and Paul Signac and by the paintings of W. Turner. Around the year 1905 he finally found his own style characterized by daring, bright colors executed in a broad brush stroke.

Biography
French painter, sculptor and lithographer, noted for being one of the foremost decorative French painters of his time and one of the most influential of the 1900s. While his superbly simple line drawings rank among the greatest works of graphic art he is best known for his abstract, intellectual use of color. The son of a grain dealer and a homemaker who painted on china, Matisse led a traditional bourgeoisie childhood in Bohain, France while attending school at Saint-Quentin. In 1887 he enrolled at the University of Paris to study law and returned to Bohain two years later with a certificate to practice. While employed at a law firm in Saint-Quentin, he rose early to attend drawing classes before going to work at a school for tapestry and textile design. The following year, while he was recovering from appendicitis, his mother gave him a box of paints to help him pass the time. "When I started to paint I felt transported to a kind of paradise. In everyday life I was usually bored and vexed by the things that people were always telling me I must do. Starting to paint, I felt gloriously free, quiet and alone...I took fright, realizing that I could not turn back."

Worcester Collection, 1953.158 View enlargement During his long career, Henri Matisse worked in varied media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and collage . Matisse's art diverged from the Cubist style in his freer use of color and greater attention to the decorative effects of line and pattern. A leader of Fauvism , a movement that relied on the exaggerated, non- naturalistic use of color, Matisse later began to exhibit a more austere style closer to Cubism. Bathers by the River, a work completed in several stages between 1909 and 1916, is a supreme example of this phase in Matisse's art. It is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. The painting began as one of three panels commissioned for the residence of a Moscow collector. The first version was a stylized rendering of a pastoral scene showing five nude females near a waterfall. After the collector decided not to purchase that
