Biography:

Henri Matisse was employed as a lawyer’s clerk before switching to his art profession in 1890. Matisse briefly studied impressionism, but under the training of Moreau, he learned to use his own simplified figures and bold colors. His first works bordered on Neo-Impressionism, but as he progressed as an artist, he found that his painting and prints employed different values. After an exhibition in 1905, Matisse and his cohorts were given the name Les Fauves by critics, supplying their movement with the name Fauvism. While battling illness in Vence, a town near Nice, he was cared for by nuns. In return, Matisse financed and designed a chapel. Bedridden at end of his life and unable to paint at an easel, he cut out and painted on paper, gluing and assembling to form his final work.

Henri Matisse
Fauves Artist
There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter
than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first
to forget all the roses that were ever painted.
Henri Matisse was born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France. He began painting during a convalescence from an operation, and in 1891 moved to Paris to study art. Matisse became an accomplished painter, sculptor and graphic designer, and one of the most influential artists of the 1900s.
He was the leader of the Fauves , a group of artists whose style emphasized intense color and vigorous brushstrokes. He believed the arrangement of colors was as important as a painting's subject matter to communicate meaning. He avoided detail, instead using bright color and strong lines to create a sense of movement. In 1905, works by Matisse and other Fauve painters were exhibited together. The bold forms and bright colors of these paintings shocked the Paris art world.
Matisse's work reflects a number of influences: the decorative quality of Near Eastern art, the stylized forms of the masks and sculpture of African, the bright colors of the French impressionists, and the simplified forms of French artist Paul Cezanne and the cubists.

Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869 – November 3, 1954) was a French artist , noted for his use of color and his fluid, brilliant, and original draftsmanship. As a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor , but principally as a painter , Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century. Matisse was one of the leaders of Les Fauves, a short-lived and loose grouping of early Modern artists whose works emphasized freshness and spontaneity and the use of deep color over the representational values retained by Impressionism . Fauvists simplified lines, made the subject of the painting easy to read, exaggerated perspectives, and used brilliant but arbitrary colors. At the end of his life, Matisse, who had been baptized a Catholic but had not practiced his religion for many years, attempted a measure of reconciliation with his faith. He designed the Chapelle du Saint-Marie du Rosaire (Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary), often referred to as the Matisse Chapel or the Vence Chapel, as a kind of spiritual challenge. Matisse considered the chapel his masterpiece, and it is recognized my many art critics as one of the greatest works of religious art of the twentieth century, a groundbreaking reconciliation of modernism with core values of traditional culture.

Henri-Emile-Benoît Matisse
Pittore e incisore francese

Henri Matisse
Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle-class family, he studied and began to practice law. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, he became intrigued by the practice of painting. In 1892, having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art formally. He joined Gustave Moreau's studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he met Camoin, Manguin, Marquet and Jean Puy Woman Reading, 1894
Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative; Matisse's own early style was a conventional form of naturalism, and he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes.

Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso , one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic (it means "wild beasts"), the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat , purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein . Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. Along with Picasso, Matisse was considered one of the world's greatest living painters throughout his life. His other works include "The Dance" (1910), "Red Fish" (1911) and "The Moroccan in Green" (1913). Previous: Helen Mirren (Actor)
