Roberto Matta, Chilean (1911 - 2002) Roberto Antonio Sebastián Matta Echaurren was born on November 11, 1911 in Santiago, Chile. Matta was educated in his native country as an architect and interior designer at the Sacré Coeur Jesuit
College and at the Catholic University of Santiago, from 1929-31. In 1933 he became a Merchant Marine which enabled him to leave Santiago and travel to Europe. From 1933-34 he worked in Paris as an atelier for famed-architect Lecorbusier. At the end of 1934 Matta visited Spain, where he met the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, who through a letter, introduced young Roberto to Salvador Dalí. Dali inturn encouraged Matta to show some of his drawings to Andre Breton.
Matta's acquaintance with Dali and Breton strongly influenced his artistic formation and subsequently connected him to the Surrealist movement, which he officially joined in 1937. He was in London for a
short period in 1936 and worked with Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. Matta's employment with the architects of the Spanish Republican pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition (1937)

Matta, Roberto
Matta, Roberto Biography
Chilean-born French artist, whose early oil paintings depict dreamlike landscapes occupied by mysterious organic shapes derived from animal forms, as well as plant life and minerals. In later works, organic, symbolic, and mechanical forms interact, sometimes violently, illustrating Matta's belief that all forces of the universe are interconnected.
Born in Santiago, Chile, Matta trained as an architect at the Catholic University there from 1929 to 1931. From 1934 to 1936 he worked for the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in Paris, France. During this period, he traveled to Madrid, Spain, where he met artists and writers influenced by surrealism, a movement that emphasized the role of chance and the subconscious mind in the creative process. Matta joined the surrealists in 1937 and exhibited drawings with them in Paris. The following year he began to incorporate chance into his oil paintings, using such techniques as pouring paint directly onto canvases to create unexpected forms. From 1939 to 1948 he lived in New York City, where he helped introduce the notion of chance to a group of artists who later founded the abstract expressionist movement.

6. Matta And Psychological Morphology
Annotated essay by Matta.
http://homepage.mac.com/photomorphose/Mattamorph.html
Psychological Morphology Roberto Matta Considering the absolute inventiveness, and the magisterial incitement to exploration and discovery
that one encounters in the visual works of Matta, it is obvious that he was the greatest painter of the
20th Century, and most likely of the 21st as well. It is the pure explosion
of a mysterious and magical knowledge that excites, and undermines the otherwise mundane and aesthetic
history of "art" with it's boring reasons for being. Matta stands alone and points the way... Preliminary Translation and Notes by Pierre Petiot In autumn 1938, Matta launched the expression psychological morphology . He spoke about it in Les Deux Magots* with large gestures and using the objects which were at hand, in front of an impassive Breton who declared not to have understood anything of it. He asked Matta to write down his theories. This was difficult for Matta, not due to the fact that he did not have ideas enough, but because it was causing him to lose his momentum. But he succeeded in producing this text: Psychological Morphology A T he concept of a psychological-time medium in which the objects are transforming, leads to compare it with an Euclidian space caught in a rotative and pulsatile transformation in which the object, with each risk of interpenetration may oscillate from point-volume to moment-eternity, from attraction-repulsion to past-future, from light-shadow to matter-movement. The fourth dimension would be the diagram of the risks encountered during the complete duration of the transformations.

Matta In America
Paintings and Drawings of the 1940s
Essays by Elizabeth A.T. Smith, Colette Dartnall and William Rubin, Foreword by Robert Fitzpatrick.
Published by Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago
This catalogue focuses on work produced by the Chilean-born artist Roberto Sebastian Matta from 1939-1948 when he lived in exile in New York. Matta, who has spent most of his life living and working in Europe, occupies a unique and pivotal place in the history of American art of this period. Of all the surrealists in exile in New York during these years, Matta formed the closest links with American artists of his own generation and served as a catalytic force in communicating ideas about surrealist processes and relating to the development of a new language of abstract painting. Matta in America includes full-color illustrations of approximately twenty paintings and twenty drawings made during the artist's American sojourn. An essay tracing the development in the 1940s of Matta's work and highlighting his interactions with other artists of the period is complemented by an essay by art historian William Rubin. Originally written for the Centre Georges Pompidous's 1985 Matta monograph, Rubin's essential text, "Matta in the United States: A Personal Note," has never before been published in English.
