Biography:

John Everett Millais entered the Royal Academy Schools of London at the astonishingly young age of eleven. Along with his colleagues, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Millaiss early work was dismissed by most critics except John Ruskin, their association lasting until Millais fell in love with Ruskins wife. After realizing in 1860 that his Pre-Raphaelite themes had fallen out of style, he began painting portraits and narrative pictures, and also illustrating books. This later work won the admiration of the Royal Academy, where he was President towards the end of his career.

Millais, Sir John Everett, 1ST BARONET
(b . June 8, 1829, Southampton, Hampshire, Eng.d. Aug. 13, 1896, London), English painter and illustrator, and a founding member of the artistic movement known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In 1838 he went to London and at the age of 11 entered the Royal Academy schools. Extremely precocious, Millais won all the academy prizes. In 1848 Millais joined with two other artists, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The Brotherhood was founded in opposition to contemporary academic painting, which the group believed was the result of the example set by Raphael and which had dominated the schools and academies since his time. At the next year's academy, Charles Dickens led the violent attack on Millais' "Christ in the House of His Parents" (1850; Tate Gallery, London), which many considered blasphemous because of its lack of idealization and seeming irreverence in the use of the mundane. "The Blind Girl" (Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery)a tour de force of Victorian sentiment and technical facility.

Millais painted the landscape for this painting beside a stream while staying with his friend William Holman Hunt on a farm in Surrey in the summer and fall of 1851. The time Millais took over this painting from the life enabled him to represent the flowers he required (some of which were cited by Shakespeare in Hamlet and some of which were included for their symbolic value), even if they did not all bloom at the same time. Following a method much used by the Pre-Raphaelites, Millais painted the figure in his London studio during the following winter. There he observed the effect of drowning, again from the life, by having Elizabeth Siddal (the group's favourite model and Rossetti's future wife) pose in a heated bathtub, wearing an old-fashioned dress.
