Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was a Dutch Abstract painter of the first half of the 20th Century. A contemporary and disciple of the famous cubists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Mondrian challenged the definition of art itself, working with simple lines, right angles, correct geometric figures and pure, primary colors. His work attained a level of abstraction far beyond that of even his most progressive colleagues. The painter was born Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, in 1872, in Amersfoort, a small town in central Holland. Though once prosperous, by the end of the 19th Century, most of the population lived in relative property, and the town was a bastion of religious fanaticism. Mondrian's father, head teacher at the local primary school was a devout Protestant, and often neglected his family in favor of service to the church and charity. Continued...

Mondriaans abstracte visie
Crétien van Campen
Abstract
Mondrian's Abstract Visio n
Piet Mondrian was convinced that reality became visible in planes and straight lines. Objects would distract the beholder from the essence of reality. The psychological background of Mondrian's perceptual ideas are discussed from the perspective of the contemporary Gestalt psychology of perception.

P. Mondriaan, De grijze boom, 1912

MONDRIAN Piet ( 1872-1944). Dutch painter; born at Amersfoort, in central Holand; died in New York. Mondrian came from a strict Calvinist family. His father, a schoolteacher himself, brought him up to teach. Eventually the son turned down this career, and having earned two degrees to teach drawing in state schools, he enrolled in the Amsterdam Academy ( 1892), where he was a studious pupil, well thought of by his teachers. Then he went through a difficult period, painting a great deal, selling little, gaining his livelihood by copying museum pieces or making scientific drawings. He worked chiefly in the vicinity of Amsterdam and often returned to the same motif: a farm at Duivendrecht, for example, which he repainted many times from the same vantage point. The colour was often delicate, although grey and dull green predominated; the style was direct and the handling full of assurance. A long stay, about 1903, among Catholic peasants in Dutch Brabant seemed to open new vistas to him.

Biography
Dutch artist influenced by Cubism, who developed a highly geometric nonobjective style he called neoplasticism. Co-founder of the magazine called STIJL in 1917, he published a book on his theories in 1920 called "Le Neoplasticisme" (French). His theories of simplification and abstraction altered the course of painting, influencing Bauhaus, modern architecture, and industrial design. Typical of his work are canvases using only vertical and horizontal lines at 90 degree angles, usually primary colors with a black and white background. He was born Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan (he later dropped one of the "a’s" in his last name) into a strict Calvinist family. In 1909, he joined the Dutch Theosophical Society, which saw mankind as moving toward a universal spiritual brotherhood, and that such progress can be expressed in geometric forms. He moved to Paris in 1912, and was in Holland visiting his sick father when World War I broke out. He stayed in Holland for five more years, pushing further into abstract art, and returned to Paris in 1919. Back in Paris, he discovered the good life, which included American jazz and nightclub dancing, and he saw the rhythm as similar to the "dynamic equilibrium" he wanted for his abstract paintings. He moved to New York City in 1940 to escape the Nazis. Subsequently, two of his great last paintings were "Broadway Boogie Woogie," 1943, and "Victory Boogie Woogie," 1944.

He was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. Next to Van Doesburg, the group's principal members were the painters Mondrian and Bart van der Leck, and the architects Gerrit Rietveld and J. J. P. Oud. The artistic philosophy that formed a basis for the group's work is known as neoplasticism — the new plastic art or sometimes called "plasticism" (or Nieuwe Beelding in Dutch). Proponents of De Stijl sought to express a new utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order. They advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and color — they simplified visual compositions to the vertical and horizontal directions, and used only primary colors along with black and white. Despite being well-known, often-parodied and even trivialized, Mondrian's paintings exhibit a complexity that belies their apparent simplicity. He is best known for his non-representational paintings that he called

Mondrian, Piet "I would not trouble to cite these observations if I did not belive they bring one to see better Mondrian's vigilant planning for variation, balance, and interest. His were not just the moves of an intellectual game or tour de force of painterly construction. Through the rhythem of differences and contrasts of a few colors and lines, with an appearence of both freedom and control in the opposition of the regular and the random, he effects a stirring expression of his delight in sensation and movement. (...) Piet Mondrian. Broadway Boogie-Woogie. 1942-43. Oil on canvas, 50 x 50"(127x127 cm). The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Given anonymously. While Mondrian's abstract paintings of the 1920s and 1930s have an architectural effect with an impressive stability and strength, the surprise of Broadway Boogie-Woogie lies in its movement and colorful visual music. The reversion to his earlier styles clearly served a new expressive intent. In conceiving Broadway Boogie-Woogie , Mondrian could well have been inspired by the sights of New York, the dazzling night spectacle of its high buildings with their countless points of light, and in particular the moving illumined signs at Times Square. He had been prepared for this new conception by his enjoyment of Paris where, on first encountering jazz and modern popular dance in the 1920s, he defended them against detractors. In Paris he discovered, besides Cubist painting, the beauty of a big city as a collective work of art and its promise of greater freedom and an understanding milieu. Shortly before coming to New York he had disclosed a new inspiration in paintings with more complex grids, which he called
