Monet, Claude
Monet, Claude (b. Nov. 14, 1840, Paris, Fr.d. Dec. 5, 1926, Giverny)
French painter, initiator, leader, and unswerving advocate of the Impressionist style. He is regarded as the archetypal Impressionist in that his devotion to the ideals of the movement was unwavering throughout his long career, and it is fitting that one of his pictures Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872)gave the group his name.
His youth was spent in Le Havre, where he first excelled as a caricaturist but was then converted to landscape painting by his early mentor Boudin , from whom he derived his firm predilection for painting out of doors. In 1859 he studied in Paris at the Atelier Suisse and formed a friendship with Pissarro . After two years' military service in Algiers, he returned to Le Havre and met Jongkind , to whom he said he owed `the definitive education of my eye'. He then, in 1862, entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris and there met Renoir Sisley , and Bazille , with whom he was to form the nucleus of the Impressionist group. Monet's devotion to painting out of doors is illustrated by the famous story concerning one of his most ambitious early works

An artist's drawings give us a wonderful window into the rest of his or her work Sometimes they look entirely different from an artist's finished paintings Old Master Drawings are invaluable because they alloy us to get closer to an artist than a finished painting can. We can see the artist at work exploring ideas. working out technical problems. setting things up for a translation into oils and canvas. In his book on the relationship between Art and Life, The Marble Faun, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote of Old Masters Drawings "this hasty rudeness made the sketches only more valuable, because the artist seemed to have bestirred himself at the pinch of the moment, snatching up whatever material vas nearest, so as to seize the first glimpse of an idea that might vanish in the twinkling of an eye. Thus, by the spell of a creased, soiled and discolored scrap of paper you were enabled to steal close to an old master, and watch him in the effervescence of his genius." 1 Like the other Old Masters that we have studied, Claude Lorrain had his own special method of use for his drawings, a method that allows us to "watch him in the effervescence of his genius" In this paper I will discuss Claude's use of drawings focusing on two drawings in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., The River Landscape (c. 1635-1638, pen and ink: with wash on paper), a preparatory study, and

14. CLAUDE LORRAIN
Image gallery of artist s works and a biography.
http://www.wga.hu/html/c/claude/
CLAUDE LORRAIN French painter (b. 1600, Chamagne, d. 1682, Roma) Claude's career spans almost the entire century - his earliest datable works are from the end of the 1620s - and he witnessed almost all the main changes of artistic style during his long stay in Rome. Some details of his early life are known, but they add up to very little in the search for his artistic origins. Leaving his native Lorraine for Rome at the age of thirteen in 1613, Claude spent the next decade of his life learning his art. Nothing survives from this period. In 1626 he returned to Lorraine and was apprenticed to Claude Deruet for one year. After completing this one-year apprenticeship he returned to Rome. Claude's earliest surviving pictures have usually been dated to around 1630, although he did not begin to keep accurate records until the mid-1630s. Then he decided to keep a record of every picture he painted, in the form of the Liber veritatis (British Museum, London), in which, after he had completed a painting, he made a careful drawing of the composition and noted the buyer on the back. He thus documented some two hundred pictures over almost fifty years. Claude's achievement as a pioneer in landscape painting has earned him a place in the pantheon of art history. He was widely imitated for almost two centuries, and therefore often produces in the popular imagination a feeling of déjà-vu, especially in his best-known compositions. Claude's powers of innovation were in fact limited - he concentrated on a very narrow range of tones in a very narrow landscape type. Once he had perfected his technique, he did not develop much further deliberately; his work was too eagerly sought after by powerful patrons for him to need to do so.

Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918)
Debussy was born in Paris and learned piano initially from his Aunt and later from some of France's finest teachers. He was clearly gifted as a pianist and a composer, won the Prix de Rome for composition and travelled around Europe meeting Liszt and Verdi among others, and also hearing the latest music from the pen of Wagner . However his music did not in any way resemble that of these other composers. Debussy was regarded as somewhat unconventional, always questioning the boundaries of musical traditions. He found a like-minded mentor in Erik Satie and inspired by his musical philosophy and the paintings of his countrymen such as Monet, he developed his own style of music which others labelled "impressionism" in parallel with the artistic movement. Although Debussy disliked the term, it aptly describes the impact on the listener where musical colours and textures assume greater importance as building blocks than the thematic material. Those musical colours involved different scales (such as the pentatonic scale) which Debussy had observed in music from outside the traditional European schools. His usage of the piano in particular was revolutionary, his music seeming to largely avoid the percussive tendencies of the instrument in favour of weaving strands together to create flowing waves or delicate flourishes. His music genuinely painted pictures in a way which had not been done before, though those pictures were not so much rigorously programmatic as evocative allowing the imagination of the listener to fill in the story.
