Monet, Claude
Bathing at La Grenouillère
1869 (150 Kb); Oil on white primed canvas, 73 x 92 cm (28 3/4 x 36 1/4 in) La Grenouillère (`The Froggery') was a restaurant and bathing place on a small branch of the Seine at Croissy. It was an extremely popular area because the Railway line from Paris to Saint-Germain, the first to be opened in France, had a station at nearby Chatou. Both Monet and Renoir painted several views of it in 1869 (Monet: La Grenouillère , Metropolitan Museum, New York; Renoir: La Grenouillère , Oskar Reinhardt Collection, Winterthur, Switzerland). Several successful academic painters had houses nearby, and the place was extensively written about, sometimes approvingly, sometimes not so, during the 1860s. It was thought of as a very `contemporary' subject, and its popularity was confirmed in the year that Monet and Renoir painted it, when it was visited by the Emperor Napoleon III and Eugénie, his wife. (detail, 210 Kb)
La Grenouillère was a riverside bathing and boating resort, popular among weekend trippers during the Second Empire (1852-1870) and after. It had a floating restaurant which is seen in another of the paintings executed by Monet during his two-month stay there in the late summer of 1869, and it appears in similar works by Renoir often painted sitting alongside Monet. The resort was situated on the Ile de Croissy, facing the left bank of the Seine.

Clauden (1528-1600) According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music , Claude le Jeune was a French composer of Protestant church music (including psalm-settings), chansons, etc.; held court appointment under Henri IV. The Oxford Companion to Music tells us further that Clauden [Claude le Jeune] was born in Valenciennes and died in Paris aged seventy-two. He was priest and musician of the Sainte Chapelle at Paris and of the royal private chapel. He is important and famous as a composer of chansons, masses, motets, madrigals, and (being of Huguenot sympathies) metrical psalms (Genevan Psalter, in four and five voices, published posthumously in 1613 and used in the reformed churches of France, Holland, and Germany).

    Nationality: French
    Categories: Painters
1840 - Born on November 14th in Paris, France. French painter who was the initiator, leader, and unswerving advocate of the Impressionist style.
1845 - When Claude, the eldest son of Adolphe Monet, a grocer, was five years old, the family moved to the Normandy coast, near Le Havre, where his father took over the management of his family's thriving ship-chandlering and grocery business.
1855 - Monet's first success as an artist came when he was 15, with the sale of caricatures that were carefully observed and well drawn. In these early years he also executed pencil sketches of sailing ships, which were almost technical in their clear descriptiveness.
1859-1860 - He first visited Paris, where he was impressed by the work of the Barbizon-school painters Charles Daubigny and Constant Troyon.
1861-1862 - This informal training was interrupted by a call to military service; he served in Algeria, where he was excited by the African light and colour.
    - Monet returned to Le Havre, perhaps because of illness, and again painted the sea with Boudin, while also meeting the Dutch marine painter Johan Barthold Jongkind.

Claude Monet also known as Oscar-Claude Monet or Claude Oscar Monet (November 14, 1840 – December 5, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. The term Impressionism , which came to describe the prominent art movement of the late nineteenth century, is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise. Monet's famous "water lilies" paintings are among the most famous paintings not only of his era, but in world history . The impressionists completely altered the landscape of art, introducing new techniques, but their approach to painting was even more radical. They completely broke with prevailing notions of representation, playing with light and color in an attempt to mimic sense impressions. This break with representation would come to define not only modern art, but the high culture of Modernism in all its manifestations, including literature, the plastic arts, and even architecture. The break with representation would have a profound effect on modern aesthetics, leading to cubism constructivism (art) , and many other movements.
