Monet, Claude
(b. Nov. 14, 1840, Paris, Fr.d. Dec. 5, 1926, Giverny)
French painter, initiator, leader, and unswerving advocate of the Impressionist style.
Encyclopaedia Britannica

Monet, Claude (1840-1926). French Impressionist painter. He is regarded as the archetypal Impressionist in that his devotion to the ideals of the movement was unwavering throughout his long career, and it is fitting that one of his pictures- Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872)-gave the group his name. His youth was spent in Le Havre, where he first excelled as a caricaturist but was then converted to landscape painting by his early mentor Boudin , from whom he derived his firm predilection for painting out of doors. In 1859 he studied in Paris at the Atelier Suisse and formed a friendship with Pissarro . After two years' military service in Algiers, he returned to Le Havre and met

71. Alexis Claude Clairaut
Biography of the mathematician.
http://www.stetson.edu/~efriedma/periodictable/html/Cl.html
Alexis Claude Clairaut
Alexis Clairaut was educated at home by his father, who taught mathematics in Paris. He learned to read from Euclid's Elements He read his first paper to the Paris Academy at the tender age of 13. He began to undertake research on double curvature curves which he completed in 1729. As a result of this work he became the youngest person ever elected to the Paris Academy in 1731. There he joined a small group who supported the natural philosophy of Newton. Clairaut published some important work during the period 1733 to 1743. He wrote a paper in 1733 on the calculus of variations, and in the same year he published on the geodesics of quadrics of rotation. The following year Clairaut studied the differential equations now known as Clairaut's differential equations, and gave a singular solution in addition to the general integral of the equations. In 1739 and 1740, he published further work on the integral calculus, proving the existence of integrating factors for solving first order differential equations (a topic which also interested Johann Bernoulli, Reyneau and Euler). In 1742, Clairaut published an important work on dynamics. In 1743, Clairaut published a book confirming the Newton-Huygens belief that the Earth was flattened at the poles. The book was a theoretical study to support the experimental data on the shape of the Earth which an expedition had gathered. The book was an important one in laying the foundations for the study of hydrostatics. It built on foundations due to Newton and Huygens who had put forward the theory that the Earth was an oblate spheroid, and also on Maclaurin's work on tides which developed some background results in hydrostatics.

Brief entry on this French thinker from the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
http://www.iep.utm.edu/h/helvetiu.htm
Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Claude Adrien Helvetius (1715—1771)
French philosopher; born in Paris January, 1715; died there Dec. 26, 1771. He studied at the College Louis-le Grand, and in 1738 received the lucrative post of farmer-general, which, however, he soon exchanged for the position of chamberlain to the queen. Tiring of the idle and dissipated life of the court, he married in 1751, and retired to a small estate at Vore, in Perche, where he devoted himself chiefly to philosophical studies. He visited England in 1764, and the following year he went to Germany, where he was received with distinction by Frederick II. He was one of the Encyclopedists, and held the skeptical and materialistic views common to that school of philosophy. His principal works are:  (Paris, 1758; Eng. transl.,  , London, 1759), which, condemned by the Sorbonne and publicly burned at Paris, was translated into most European languages, and read more than any other book of the time; and the posthumous  (2 vols., London, 1772; Eng. transl.,

Claude Adrien Helvétius was born in Paris, France , and was descended from a family of physicians, originally surnamed Schweitzer (literally " Swissman "; Latinized as Helvétius ). His grandfather introduced the use of ipecacuanha ; his father was first physician to Marie Leszczyńska , queen of France. Claude Adrien was trained for a financial career, apprenticed to his maternal uncle in Caen , but he occupied his spare time with poetry. Aged twenty-three, at the queen's request, he was appointed as a farmer-general, a tax-collecting post worth 100,000 crowns a year. Thus provided for, he proceeded to enjoy life to the utmost, with the help of his wealth and liberality, his literary and artistic tastes - he attended, for example, the progressive

Description
This lavishly illustrated book presents the first complete overview of the life, art, and times of the quintessential Impressionist. Tucker, one of our foremost authorities on Monet, offers a striking new view of the artist, showing him to be a far more complicated figure than previously acknowledged, fiercely competitive and ambitious, as well as sensitive and inventive.
