Berthe Morisot wurde am 14. Januar 1841 in Bourges geboren.

French painter and printmaker. The first woman to join the circle of the French impressionist painters, she exhibited in all but one of their shows, and, despite the protests of friends and family, continued to participate in their struggle for recognition. Born into a family of wealth and culture, Morisot received the conventional lessons in drawing and painting. She went firmly against convention, however, in choosing to take these pursuits seriously and make them her life's work. Having studied for a time under Camille Corot, she later began her long friendship with Edouard Manet , who became her brother-in-law in 1874 and was the most important single influence on the development of her style. Unlike most of the other impressionists, who were then intensely engaged in optical experiments with color, Morisot and Manet agreed on a more conservative approach, confining their use of color to a naturalistic framework. Morisot, however, did encourage Manet to adopt the impressionists' high-keyed palette and to abandon the use of black. Her own carefully composed, brightly hued canvases are often studies of women, either out-of-doors or in domestic settings. Morisot and American artist Mary Cassatt are generally considered the most important women painters of the later 19th century.

    Morisot, Berthe
Morisot, Berthe key , French impressionist painter. She studied with many gifted painters, including Corot . She formed a close friendship with Manet , who became her brother-in-law, and she served as model for several of his best-known paintings. The two greatly influenced each other's artistic development. Her own later work inclined toward pure impressionism in its rendering of light, while retaining an unusual smoothness of brushwork. Her paintings formed an important addition to all but one impressionist exhibit from 1874 through 1885. Her most notable works, including Young Woman at the Dance (1880; Paris) and La Toilette (Art Inst., Chicago), are painted in clear, luminous colors. Her early subject matter included landscapes and marine scenes; later she most frequently painted tranquil portraits of mothers and children. Morisot's works have been particularly popular in the United States, and many important works are in American collections. See catalog (ed. by D. Rouart, 1960); her correspondence (ed. by D. Rouart; tr., 2d ed. 1959).

Biography
French artist, an impressionist painter and from a noted family, the great-great granddaughter of Jean Honore Fragonard. When Morisot began her study of painting in the late 1850s, the Louvre did not contain a single painting by a female. She was a third daughter, followed five years later by a son. The family was well-to-do and the girls were even given a minimal education. Berthe showed musical ability on the piano before she turned to drawing, along with her sister Emma. They began to copy the great artists in the Louvre, where they were strictly chaperoned, and also forbidden to take formal art studies: their society had little use for independent, ambitious women. At 19, the sisters began painting along the banks of the Oise, and they began to produce extraordinary work. Berthe was thrilled by the work of Edouard Manet and over the years posed for 11 of his paintings, a venture that was slightly on the edge of scandalous as an artist’s model was generally considered to be a woman of low virtue. An incredible, albeit silent talent of the impressionist school, Morisot succumbed to the accepted station of an artistic female by painting the lifestyle of women in the retiring rooms of the French bourgeoisie, in what became known as "the feminine visual culture." While this culture supported Morisot's skill and provided her with endless subject matter including women poring over dress patterns and posing for fittings, it impeded her when she sought to reposition herself as a serious artist. Despite the free-flowing progressiveness of the Impressionist movement and her connection to Edouard Manet, pressure on Morisot to conform to the acceptable role of a talented woman caused her deep emotional pain. Following a crisis of depression she destroyed most of her early work and wrote "I don't want to work anymore for the sake of working. It seems to me that a painting (of mine) could sell and that's my only ambition."

Berthe Morisot was a woman of extraordinary talents who carved for herself a career within the art world of nineteenth century Paris. She was one of only a few women who exhibited with both the Paris Salon and the highly influential and innovative Impressionists. Her work endures today as a major representative of the Impressionist school. Study: At the Water's Edge, 1864
