Art and Socialism - Introduction
By William Morris
Art and Socialism was delivered, as a lecture, to the Leicester Secular Society on January 23rd, 1884. Art and Socialism 's outstanding feature is perhaps the stress laid on work as a necessity of human life, not merely as a means of obtaining a livelihood. Morris insists that only Socialism can restore work to its proper, central position." First published as a pamphlet at Leek, 1884 reprinted in The Collected Works of William Morris , XXIII, 192-214, Cole, 624-45, Jackson, 96-I 14 and and Political Writings of William Morris , ed. A. Before Roycroft and Stickley... Before the term "mission-style" increased the price of anything with slats, there was the English Arts and Crafts movement, there was William Morris, and with him the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood. William Morris patterns have been popular since the end of the 19th century and have never lost their appeal. With Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Arthur Hughes, his lifelong friend, Edward Burne-Jones, and the other preRaphaelites, he changed the direction of English art, architecture, and design and began a return to values of craftsmanship and quality materials that continue to enjoy a renaissance in these areas. I write more about this in my article, On William Morris: The Soul of Arts and Crafts . I also love Terri Windling's article on the Preraphaelites and Writers of Fantasy and recommend it to you highly.

    Morris, William
Find this term in: para # Section 11, 4 William Morris (1834-1896) was a British writer and artist. In A Dream of John Ball , Morris describes his ideal British socialist commonwealth, through the historical figure of John Ball. In 1381 John Ball was executed after inciting peasants to rebellion against Richard II's unfair tax scheme that demanded one shilling from everyone including peasants. An itinerant preacher, John Ball was defrocked for his speeches that insisted all men were created equal. The passage from Morris quoted by Dr. Ambedkar occurs after John Ball has been rescued by his followers from imprisonment by the Archbishop of Canterbury. John Ball says: "'Good fellows, it was your fellowship and your kindness that took me out of the archbishop's prison three days agone, though God wot ye had nought to gain by it save outlawry and the gallows; yet lacked I not your fellowship before ye drew near me in the body, and when between me and Canterbury street was yet a strong wall, and the turnkeys and sergeants and bailiffs. 'For hearken, my friends and helpers; many days ago, when April was yet young, I lay there, and the heart that I had strung up to bear all things because of the fellowship of men and the blessed saints and the angels and those that are, and those that are to be, this heart, that I had strung up like a strong bow, fell into feebleness, so that I lay there a-longing for the green fields and the white-thorn bushes and the lark singing over the corn, and the talk of good fellows round the ale-house bench, and the babble of the little children, and the team on the road and the beasts afield, and all the life of earth; and I alone all the while, near my foes and afar from my friends, mocked and flouted and starved with cold and hunger; and so weak was my heart that though I longed for all these things yet I saw them not, nor knew them but as names; and I longed so sore to be gone that I chided myself that I had once done well; and I said to myself:

    http://www.williamemorris.com/
Fine Art paintings and giclees of Canadian and American Still Lifes, landscapes and street scenes. Latest Paintings Scenes of Ontario Scenes of Quebec Scenes of Montreal ... Giclee Limited Editions William Edward Morris ( Canadian) was born in Montreal and raised in Montreal's Outremont neighborhood. The stately architecture which abounds this historic and venerable part of the city had an early and profound effect on the artist, as is in evidence in his paintings' portrayal of inner city life. In his formative years, Morris studied at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts (Montreal) under one of the renowned "Group of Seven" Canadian artists Arthur Lismer. In secondary school in Montreal he was greatly influenced by the famous Canadian artist Anne Douglas Savage. Morris later went on to a notable and longstanding career as a professional Architect and practiced for many years. Having combined his own feelings of the inner city with interpretations of today's and yesteryear's nostalgia he has accomplished a unique style which is evident in his paintings. Morris' paintings are a blend of impressionism and realism. His work reveals a keen insight into the elements of architecture and life's daily place within its context. They reveal scenes of Canadian and American cities embracing both pastoral and bustling city urban environment. Recently Morris has developed a love of painting garden scenes which he calls "gardenscapes". These paintings are either oils or acrylics on canvas or masonite. Morris has traveled extensively and spent much of his time painting Canadian and American scenes.
