Biography:

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter, known primarily for his unsettling painting The Scream. He studied in Oslo and after a brief tour around Europe, settled there. He encountered the work of Gauguin and Van Gogh while in Paris in 1908. Along with painting, Munch created etchings, lithographs and woodcuts, all which focused on agitated and disturbing imagery with life and death as primary themes. The disconcerting nature of his work caused disturbance in Berlin in 1892, where his exhibition was forced to close.

Norwegian painter and printmaker whose intense, evocative treatment of psychological and emotional themes was a major influence on the development of German Expressionism in the early 20th century. His painting "The Cry" (1893) is regarded as an icon of existential anguish.

"The Sick Child" (1886; Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo), "The Death Chamber" (1892; Munch-museet, Oslo), "By the Death Bed" (1895; Rasmus Meyers Collection, Bergen, Nor.), and "The Dead Mother" (1899; Kunsthalle, Bremen) are among the many paintings and prints that reflect his macabre childhood impressions. At an early age, Munch showed a flair for drawing but received little formal training. For a short time, he attended the School of Art and Handcraft in Christiania (Oslo). His student works were criticized by Christian
