His painting "The Cry" (1893) is regarded as an icon of existential anguish. The early years. Munch, born into a family prominent for its contribution to the political and cultural life of Norway, was the second eldest of five children. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was five; 10 years later his eldest sister died of the same disease, and another sister became mentally ill. Both his father and brother also died while Munch was a youth. The spectre of death and terminal illness that filled his childhood was to preoccupy him throughout his life, becoming one of the principal themes in his work.
