-José Clemente Orozco The life of Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949), a life filled with drama, adversity, and triumph, is one of the great stories of the modern era. Despite poverty, childhood rheumatic fever that damaged his heart and an explosion in his youth that cost him his left hand, Orozco persisted in his wish to become an artist. He experienced the carnage and duplicity of the Mexican Revolution, the hardship following the New York stock market crash in 1929, and rising fascism in Europe during his only trip there in 1932, and emerged with an aesthetic and moral vision unparalleled in twentieth century painting. Born in Zapotlan el Grande to a middle-class family that fell on hard times, Orozco was shaped at the outset of his career by the experience of ten years of civil war that gripped Mexico during the second decade of this century. He was twenty-seven when the Revolution began, thirty-four when he left Mexico for the United States for the first time in 1917. Some measure of the brutality he witnessed during those years is conveyed in his autobiography: Orozco created major frescoes in Mexico after his return there in 1934, including the magnificent cycle with which he covered the interior walls of the Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara in 1939. The immense nave, encompassing a series of arched panels and semi-circular ceiling vaults, provided a dramatic space for Orozco to explore the interplay of indigenous and European forces within modern-day Mexico. At the center of the nave, sixty meters above the floor, his majestic

Posada , Mexico's first great printmaker, whose grotesque caricatures and illustrations appeared in sensational news sheets devoted to reporting lurid crimes and political scandals. Orozco was captivated by Posada's strong images and vivid style and for the rest of his life acknowledged the early influence of the master engraver. Orozco's prodigious skill was immediately recognized, and he began night classes in drawing at the Academy of San Carlos. Toward the end of the decade, his pursuit of art was interrupted when he was forced to study for careers as an agronomist and, later, as an architectural draftsman. When he was 17, however, he lost his left hand in a laboratory accident, and he abandoned his architectural studies for painting. He reentered the Academy of San Carlos in 1905 with a renewed passion for painting and set about assiduously to become a competent painter. About this time Orozco became acquainted with a radical student named Gerardo Murillo . Violently opposed to the cultural anti-Mexicanism in vogue, Murillo assumed the Aztec name of Doctor Atl and urged artists to reject the cultural domination of Europe and to cultivate in their work Mexican traits. Accordingly, Orozco began conscientiously to explore Mexican themes and to draw more directly from scenes of daily life. He became a caricaturist for an opposition newspaper and haunted the barrios, or slums, of Mexico City, painting a series of watercolours dealing with the lives of prostitutes and collectively titled

Mexican Muralists: Orozco, Rivera, Siqueiros

Desmond Rochfort
March 1998
Paperback Book Review Jose Clemente Orozco: Mexican Artist Barbara C. Cruz August 1998 Hardcover From School Library Journal Gr 6 Up-A fair and well-rounded introduction to the great muralist and highly influential 20th-century artist. Cruz clearly illustrates how Orozco's prodigious talent and dedication to perfecting his craft eclipsed the injuries he suffered as a teenager that caused him to lose one hand and injure the other. Many of the artist's works are mentioned and given brief but enlightening interpretations. The author clearly explains the controversial themes of Orozco's works, which often dealt with sensitive political and social issues. There are many black-and-white photos and a few pertinent quotations from Orozco himself, family members, and friends. The book has extensive chapter notes and a list for further reading, both evidence of its scholarly format that nevertheless remains approachable. This accessible... Jose Clemente Orozco (Joe R and Teresa Lozano Long Series in Latin American and Latino Art and Culture): Graphic Work Jose Clemente Orozco September 2004 Hardcover Book Description Jose Clemente Orozco in the United States Renato Gonzalez Gonzalez Mello April 2002 Hardcover From Library Journal Containing 11 essays, numerous illustrations, and extensive notes, this catalog accompanies a traveling exhibition that explores Mexican artist Orozco's productivity while visiting the United States between 1927 and 1934. During this time of self-imposed exile, the renowned social realist muralist departed from themes focused on the Mexican Revolution and rural life, which had defined his previous work. He won commissions from various U.S. institutions, including the New School in New York City and Dartmouth College, by concentrating on modern urban subjects: workers, unemployment, and the economic depression that began in 1929. His politically charged works from this period, like those of his colleagues Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, include drawings, paintings, prints, and easel paintings, as well as...

Orozco's work is bold in execution, often brilliant in color, and deals compassionately with social themes, especially human versus machine. From 1917 to 1919 and from 1927 to 1934, Orozco was in the United States. Much of his work is true fresco painting, executed directly on wet plaster, such as his 1930 mural Mankind's Struggle at New School Univ., New York City. His work in the United States also includes Prometheus (Frary Hall, Pomona College, Calif.) and Epic of Culture in the New World (Baker Library, Dartmouth College). There are also several fine murals in Mexico, such as those at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City and at Guadalajara in the university, governor's palace, and cultural institute.
