Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is one of the great artists of the 20th century. The Centre Georges Pompidou
The reception of Picasso's sculptures began late because Picasso himself had made them one of the best kept art secrets of the 20th century. Until the 1960s, he hid his sculptures away from the public and, until his death in 1973, almost all of the originals remained with him. From his cubistic assemblages and the iron sculptures, which he made from 1929 onwards, almost none was present in museums or collections. At Picasso's first retrospective in the Galéries Petit in 1932, only seven sculptures were exposed. It was not until the important exhibitions in Paris, London and New York of 1966 and 1967 that he released them into the public space.
The exhibition and the catalogue cover all the spectrum of Picasso's sculptural work: his early bronzes, the appearance of his cubistic constructions made of metal, wood and found pieces, the filigreed sculptures and the over-life sized heads of the Boisgeloup period, the material assemblies with the "encyclopaedically sculptures" of the 1950s, the tiny figures made of torn and folded paper, and the late, perception challenging folding sculptures made of sheet metal and the use of emptiness in his two-dimensional works.

Biography
Spanish artist who lived most of his life in France, Picasso is world-renowned as one of the inventors of the Cubist movement. Considered to be the most original, influential and dominant presence in the visual arts of the early 20th century, his works are on display in the most prestigious museums and galleries of the world. His enormous output, including 14,000 canvases and thousands of prints, engravings, book illustrations, ceramics and sculptures, made him a billionaire at his death. His various studios and houses contained not only his own work, but also other works and collections that he had amassed over the years. The eldest of three children, Pablo is said to have been born dead. The story has it that a visitor blew cigar smoke into his face and the newborn began crying. His father, Jose Ruiz Blasco, was an art teacher and sometime painter who stopped painting when he realized the depth of his son’s talent. As a child, Pablo was surrounded by females. In addition to his mother and his maiden aunts, he had two younger sisters, Lola, born in December 1884, and Concepcion, born in 1887 (she died January 10, 1895). He is said to have learned macho behavior and control of women early, becoming a first-class manipulator. At three years old he experienced an earthquake which later colored his war-inspired masterpiece, "Guernica." His earliest surviving picture is "Picador" painted in 1889. Of his childhood work, he later said, "I never drew like a child. When I was 12, I drew like Raphael.â€

  • Born: 25 October 1881 Birthplace: Died: 8 April 1973 Best Known As: The 20th century's most famous artist
Pablo Ruiz y Picasso showed artistic ability at an early age, and when he began to study art seriously in Barcelona and Madrid, he was already a skilled painter. In the early 1900s he visited and eventually settled in Paris, where he was part of a vibrant artistic community that included Gertrude Stein . Although greatly influenced by other artists in Europe and beyond, Picasso was inventive and prolific, and early in his career earned a worldwide reputation as an innovator. Along with Henri Matisse , he is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. His enormous body of work spans so many years that art experts generally separate his career into distinct phases, such as the Blue Period, the Rose Period and his most famous contribution to modern art, Cubism. Picasso, unlike so many before him, was an international celebrity as well as an important contributor to the world of art. Previous: Oscar Peterson (Pianist / Jazz Musician)

One of the most recognized figures in twentieth century art, he is best known as the co-founder, along with Georges Braque , of cubism Cubism is perhaps the quintessential modernist artist movement. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form—instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to present the piece in a greater context. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles presenting no coherent sense of depth. The background and object (or figure) planes interpenetrate one another to create the ambiguous shallow space characteristic of cubism. The larger cultural significance of cubism pertains to the disintegration of a unified sense of the world that had pervaded European Christian culture prior to the shock of World War I While Picasso's influence on twentieth century art is unquestionable, the lasting significance of the deconstruction of form and meaning implicit in his art remains in question. Representational art, dating to humankind's prehistory, suggests continuity and the legitimate and coherent place of human beings within the sphere of nature. Critics have remarked that the discontinuity represented by Picasso's art reflected not only the anomie of modern life, but also the artist's own degraded moral sensibility. The breakdown of human solidarity and detachment to past and future expressed in both the artist's life and work may mirror the uncertainties of the age, yet it is questionable whether they point toward an enduring

Pablo Ruiz Picasso
