Pissarro, Camille
Pissarro, Camille
French impressionist painter, whose friendship and support provided encouragement for many younger painters. Camille Pissarro was born in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, and moved to Paris in 1855, where he studied with the French landscape painter Camille Corot. At first associated with the Barbizon school, Pissarro subsequently joined the impressionists and was represented in all their exhibitions. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), he lived in England and made a study of English art, particularly the landscapes of Joseph Mallord William Turner. For a time in the 1880s Pissarro, discouraged with his work, experimented with pointillism; the new style, however, proved unpopular with collectors and dealers, and he returned to what he found to be a freer impressionist style.
A painter of sunshine and the scintillating play of light, Pissarro produced many quiet rural landscapes and river scenes. Pissaro also painted street scenes in Paris, Le Havre, and London. An excellent teacher, he counted among his pupils and associates the French painters Paul Gauguin and Paul Cezanne, his son Lucien Pissarro, and the American impressionist Mary Cassatt. Of Pissarro's great output (including oil paintings, watercolors, and graphics), many works hang in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, and in the leading art galleries of Europe. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, has his Bather in the Woods (1895).

To escape the Franco-German War, in 1870 Pissarro fled to England; there he and Monet, who had also fled France, visited the museums, where they viewed British landscape paintings. It was in London that Pissarro married Julie Vellay, formerly his mother's maid, who had already borne him two of their seven children. out -of-doors, even in the middle of winter. Pissarro's paintings are never dramatic; on the contrary, his leading motifs during the 1870s and 1880s are simply houses, factories, trees, haystacks, fields, labouring peasants, and river scenes. Forms do not dissolve but remain firm, and colours are strong; during the latter part of the 1870s his comma-like brushstrokes frequently recorded the sparkling scintillation of light, as in "Orchard with Flowering Fruit Trees, Springtime, Pontoise" (1877). Although his paintings were sold by the dealer Paul Durand -Ruel, who represented several of the Impressionists, Pissarro continued to experience financial hardships, which he described in letters to his eldest son, Lucien; this remarkable correspondence began in 1883 and lasted for 20 years.

The Pissarros operated a dry goods store in what is now known as the Pissarro Building, 14 Dronnigens Gade in Queen's Quarter, Charlotte Amalie. Overlooking the main street, the family's upstairs residence was a spacious apartment. Large shuttered windows and high ceilings let breezes through during the hot summer months. It was a busy time for the little port town of Charlotte Amalie. Dozens of merchant sailing ships would come to call every week with trade goods; during the age of sail, "free port" status and favorable tradewinds made St. Thomas a major point of transshipment between the Americas, Europe and Africa. As diverse as the itineraries of these great ships was the variety of the peoples and cultures settled in the Danish West Indies. As a boy, Camille spoke French at home, English, and Spanish with the Negro population of the island. His parents sent him to Paris at age 12 to a small boarding school. It was there that the director, seeing his interest in art, advised him to take "advantage of his life in the tropics by drawing coconut trees." When he returned to St. Thomas in 1847, this advice had been taken to heart:
