Ed Harris as Jackson Pollock from the 1999 motion picture "Pollack".
Around this time, Pollock was invited to participate in a group exhibition. Here, is where he met his future wife Lee Krasner. His work also came to the attention of Peggy Guggenheim, the wealthy New York heiress whose money built the Guggenheim Museum. She became his dealer and patron, introducing his work to audiences. In November 1943, she gave him a solo exhibition and a contract guaranteeing him one-hundred fifty dollars a month for a year. In 1945, Guggenheim lent Pollock the down payment on a small house in The Springs on East Hampton, Long Island. He and his wife lived there till their deaths and their house is now the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center.

Jackson Pollock—and True and False Ambition: The Urgent Difference
By Dorothy Koppelman
I learned this from Eli Siegel in an Aesthetic Realism lesson and it is written down in capital letters in my notes: "THE BIGGEST SUCCESS — THAT WE LIKE THE WORLD THROUGH KNOWING IT." I learned that the only way to like the world honestly is to see it as a oneness of opposites; and further, that seeing it this way is the means to honestly liking yourself. The more I study this Aesthetic Realism principle stated by Mr. Siegel, the more I am thrilled at its truth: "The world, art, and self explain each other: each is the aesthetic oneness of opposites." I shall be talking tonight about my life, what a woman learned in Aesthetic Realism consultations and about the famous 20th century American artist whose works, as one critic put it, "embody the supreme level of pictorial ambition," and whose tumultuous life is the subject of the recent film made by Ed Harris.

Jackson Pollock 1912-1956
"When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of "get acquainted" period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well."
PAINTINGS
Pioneer of ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM; b. Cody, Wyo. He began to study painting in 1929 at the Art Students' League, New York, under the Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton. During the 1930s he worked in the manner of the Regionalists, being influenced also by the Mexican muralist painters (Orozco, Rivera, Siqueiros) and by certain aspects of Surrealism. From 1938 to 1942 he worked for the Federal Art Project. By the mid 1940s he was painting in a completely abstract manner, and the `drip and splash' style for which he is best known emerged with some abruptness in 1947. Instead of using the traditional easel he affixed his canvas to the floor or the wall and poured and dripped his paint from a can; instead of using brushes he manipulated it with `sticks, trowels or knives' (to use his own words), sometimes obtaining a heavy impasto by an admixture of `sand, broken glass or other foreign matter'. This manner of Action painting had in common with Surrealist theories of automatism that it was supposed by artists and critics alike to result in a direct expression or revelation of the unconscious moods of the artist.

Biography:

Jackson Pollack grew up on the west coast, influenced by the art of the Native American and Mexican cultures in his area. He also was impressed by the brash techniques of Benton and the Regionalists. One of his other interests, psychology, found its way into Pollack’s work. In the Surrealist style, he began to paint spontaneously, as a way to depict subconscious thoughts and feelings. Pollack’s alcoholism and misunderstood paintings pushed him into isolation until 1947, when he introduced his “drip” technique. This process of dripping paint straight from the can onto a canvas made Pollack famous. However, his production decreased in the 1950’s and he died in a car crash in 1956.

Action painting
Pollock was the first ``all-over'' painter, pouring paint rather than using brushes and a palette, and abandoning all conventions of a central motif. He danced in semi-ecstasy over canvases spread across the floor, lost in his patternings, dripping and dribbling with total control. He said: ``The painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through.'' He painted no image, just ``action'', though ``action painting'' seems an inadequate term for the finished result of his creative process. Lavender Mist is 3 m long (nearly 10 ft), a vast expanse on a heroic scale. It is alive with colored scribble, spattered lines moving this way and that, now thickening, now trailing off to a slender skein. The eye is kept continually eager, not allowed to rest on any particular area. Pollock has put his hands into paint and placed them at the top right an instinctive gesture eerily reminiscent of cave painters who did the same. The overall tone is a pale lavender, maide airy and active. At the time Pollock was heiled as the greatest American painter, but there are already those who feel his work is not holding up in every respect. Lee Krasner (1908-84), who married Pollock in 1944, was not celebrated at all during his lifetime (cut short in 1956 by a fatal car crash), but it was actually she who first started covering the canvas with a passionate flurry of marks. The originality of her vision, its stiff integrity and its great sense of internal cohesion, is now beginning to be recognized.

Biography
American artist, a painter and exponent of abstract expressionism and, in particular, the form known as "action painting." Pollack went further, however, and developed his hallmark technique called "drip painting." He believed that art derived from the unconscious, and one of his early works, "The Moon-Woman Cuts the Circle," 1943, shows the passionate intensity with which he pursued his personal vision. Born in Cody, Wyoming, Pollock’s family moved before he was one year old, and he spent his formative years in California and Arizona. In 1930, he moved to New York City where he enrolled at the Art Students League. He studied with his brother’s teacher, the painter Thomas Hart Benton, and in the autumn of 1935, he found a job as an easel painter with the WPA Federal Art Project. With this job providing security through the years of the Great Depression, he concentrated on his art, and in November 1943, his first one-man show was held at the Art of This Century Gallery in New York City. His first wall-size work, "Mural," was completed in 1943-44. In 1951-52 he painted primarily in black and white, as shown in paintings like "Echo." He created his last major work, "Portrait and a Dream," in 1953.

Customer Reviews
If you're only going to buy one book on Pollock, this is it I strongly disagree with another Amazon reviewer who said the quality of the art reproductions in Landau's biography varied. As someone who has bought a lot of art books, I thought the color plates exceptionally vivid and a more than adequate basis for studying Pollock's work in light of Ellen Landau's insightful commentary. Every major work is presented as a full-page (or double page) image. They are simply labeled by the painting's title (and an alternate if a painting acquired one in the art world other than the one Pollock gave it himself) and the date; the usual caption clutter (medium, size, present owner) are provided in an appendix. Whatever biography you choose to read, you'll want Landau's book near at hand for the beautiful, detailed reproductions of Pollock's best-known paintings. The book's Selected Bibliography, unfortunately, includes only the works Landau consulted but did not cite in her notes. In other words, the reader will have to scour the notes to find other key works. (The bibliography in Adams's book is more recent, comprehensive, and reader-friendly).
